THE WEEKEND
Midwestern State looks to gain momentum with a pair of matches this weekend. The Mustangs play host to Newman (Kan.) Friday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. MSU then hits the road to take on Texas A&M International Sunday at noon in Laredo.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State appears to be turning the corner scoring seven goals in its last three matches notching a 4-1 win at Colorado State-Pueblo and a 2-0 victory over Rogers State in the process. Junior forward Len Smith tallied each of the Mustangs' three goals last weekend notching one a 2-1 double overtime setback to St. Edward's before scoring twice in a 2-0 victory over Rogers State. Smith paces MSU with three goals and an assist in five matches this season. Junior forward Chase Robertson adds a goal and three assists while sophomore midfielder Idrissa Camara has a goal and an assist. Junior midfielder Andrew Power, senior midfielder B.A. Catney and junior forward Dan Johns have accounted for a goal apiece. The Mustangs have doubled up the opposition in shots taken at 98-43 while placing 42.9 percent on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Petolick made two saves in his first start of the season Sunday against Rogers State to carry MSU to its first shutout of the season. The Mustangs have scored eight goals in seven matches this season while allowing seven.

SCOUTING THE JETS
Newman (0-5-1) has dropped its last two matches and has not fared well on the road this season. The Jets dropped a 2-1 result to NAIA Southwestern Christian Wednesday night at home as the Eagles netted a score off of a penalty kick in the 88th minute to secure the victory at Wilkins Field in Wichita. NU has been outscored 11-2 in its three road matches this season falling to No. 6 Rockhurst (5-0), William Jewell (3-2) and Fort Hays State (3-0). Newman snapped a season opening three-game skid with a 1-1 draw with Oklahoma Christian on Sep. 20 but have dropped results to Fort Hays State and Southwestern Christian since. Freshman midfielder Adam Sawyer leads the Jets with two tallies while freshman midfielder Noel Torres and freshman midfielder Luca Anelli have accounted for a goal apiece. Newman scores 0.67 goals per game and allows 2.5.

ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State meets Newman (Kan.) for the fifth time on the pitch Friday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. The Mustangs have won all five meetings between the programs including a 1-0 double overtime victory last season on a B.A. Catney goal in the 110th minute.

SCOUTING THE DUSTDEVILS
Texas A&M International (1-4-1) has played five of its first six matches away from home and has tough losses to Drury (Mo.), Fort Lewis (Colo.) and West Texas A&M to show for it. The Dustdevils suffered 3-2 setback in their lone home match to Texas-Brownsville on Sep. 9 and their only victory came in a 3-1 result over Mary (S.D.) on Sep. 14 in Durango, Colo. TAMIU earned a 2-2 draw at Eastern New Mexico before falling to West Texas A&M 2-0 last weekend on the road. Texas A&M International starts a four-game home stand Friday night against St. Mary's before welcoming the Mustangs on Sunday. Freshman forward Ryan Hodgson leads the Dustdevils with two goals this season while senior forward Diego Manzano-Cano, junior defender Oscar Pompa, sophomore midfielder Camilo Botero and Jordan Pearce have scored a goal each. TAMIU has allowed 17 goals in six games this season while scoring six of its own.

ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State meets Texas A&M International for the ninth time on the pitch Sunday afternoon in Laredo. The Mustangs own a 6-0-2 edge in the series which dates back to the 2008 season. Midwestern claimed a 2-0 win over the Dustdevils in its 2002 season opener in Wichita Falls before playing TAMIU to a scoreless draw on Sep. 14 in Laredo.
