WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State didn't make many errors Tuesday night in its Lone Star Conference opener.
But Angelo State proved opportunistic as sophomore forward Sierra Anderson tapped in a loose ball 5 yards in front of the Mustangs' goal to provide the difference in 80th minute as the Rambelles took a 1-0 decision at the MSU Soccer Field.
"It was a breakdown," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "They came in on the outside and I don't think we were defending real well (at that point in the game). They got free for a cross and we just didn't handle it very well. They were at the right place at the right time."
The cross from the right wing was redirected by an MSU defender compromising keeper
Kallie Essary's positioning allowing Anderson find an open net.
The play tainted another solid performance for Essary, who made six saves with many coming on shots from beyond the 18-yard box.
"I was proud of the way we played," Trimble said. "We didn't score, but all you can ask is for your girls to play hard and play good soccer. We made good decisions."
Angelo State senior goalkeeper Danielle Edwards notched her third consecutive shutout making six saves of her own as she was able to slap a glove on the Mustangs' best chance of the night in the 68th minute.
MSU sophomore forward
Ashley Cottrell slammed a shot off of an ASU defender which spun right to sophomore midfielder
Morgan Hannon, who settled the ball and shot toward the upper-right corner of the net.
Edwards recovered to partially punch the ball just high enough to rebound off of the crossbar.
"We created some good opportunities, but we need to follow those shots," Trimble said. "They have a good goalkeeper and are very organized. I still think we were able to create some really good chances in the second half."
The Mustangs (4-3, 0-1) close a four-match home stand Tuesday night against Central Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the MSU Soccer Field.
Angelo State improved to 4-2-1 on the season and to 1-0 in league play.
