Six different Mustangs score in 6-0 win over Newman

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Six different players tallied goals as Midwestern State rolled to a 6-0 win over Newman (Kan.) Friday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

"It helped us to know that if we get forward, press and keep moving off of the ball that we are going to create some chances," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "We've been creating chances all year, but we haven't been putting them in. We missed some good chances today even though we scored six."

Junior forward Len Smith ignited the Mustangs with his team leading fourth goal of the season in the 11th minute knocking in Idrissa Camara's centering pass off of a great throw-in from Chase Robertson.

Seven minutes later, Camara drilled his second goal of the campaign off of a cross from Kyle Baccus then Griff Stratford gave MSU a 3-0 lead at the intermission finishing an over the top long ball from Javan Toledo in the 39th minute.

Still, Elder made defensive corrections at the break after Newman worked for seven shots in the opening half. The Mustangs responded by limiting the Jets to two shots in the second half with one banking off of the crossbar off of the boot of Victor Rojas in the 58th minute.

"We told them at halftime we really didn't want to give up any shots in the second half," Elder said. "Of course, the one they got hit the (crossbar). We did better defensively in the second half. We were closing the ball better."

The Mustangs continued on the attack netting goals from VcMor Eligwe in the 66th minute, Dan Johns in the 74th minute and Andrew Power in the 76th minute. Overall, MSU commanded a 27-9 edge in shots placing 16 on frame.

"We finished some good opportunities," Elder said. "We had some good offensive production today. I think we just have to piece it together. They have a lot of injuries and are banged up like we are, but we are always happy with a win right now. We are back to .500 and have a tough road trip in front of us."

The Mustangs (3-3) hit the road to face Texas A&M International Sunday in Laredo. Kickoff is set for noon.

Newman dipped to 0-6-1.
