SCOUTING THE WOLVES …

West Georgia enters the game with a 2-0 record, 0-0 in Gulf South Conference play. The Wolves opened the season with a 31-21 win at Mars Hill (N.C.), then beat Miles (Ga.) last Saturday 31-7 at home.

The Wolves are under the command of head coach Daryl Dickey, who sports a 15-37 record in his sixth season at UWG with a 43-53 overall reccord in 10 seasons.

The Wolves are a strong running team led by senior running back Quan Jones. The 5-11, 190 pound senior has rushed for 253 yards in the first two games to average 126.5 yards a game and rank second in the GSC and 21st nationally.

West Georgia also uses a pair of quarterbacks, calling the co-starters, in senior Austin Trainor and sophomore Dallas Dickey. Trainor has actually taken the first snap in the last two games, but is only averaging 7.5 yards rushing and 21.5 yards passing a game. Dickey is the team's third-leading rusher with 41.5 yards a game, while completing 61.9 percent of his passes for an average of 48.0 yards a contest.

Defensively, outside linebacker Tyrell Adams leads the Wolves with 13 total tackles that includes five tackles for losses of 10 yards with an interception. Linebacker Alex Armah has 12 stops this season, while safety Donovan Jackson has 10 tackles with one interception return for a touchdown (48 yards).

UWG is averaging 322.0 yards of total offense a game (sixth in GSC, 20th nationally) to go with 31.0 points an outing (fourth in GSC, 64th nationally), while allowing 311.0 yards defensively (third in GSC, 36th nationally) and 14.0 points an outing (first in GSC, 20th nationally).

All-Time Series: Midwestern State leads the series 1-0, with the only game being played last season, a 35-17 win at Memorial Stadium on Nov. 10, 2012.

NOTEWORTHY
  • MSU starts the season 0-1 for just the second time in the Bill Maskill era with the 27-24 setback to Tarleton State. Midwestern won its first 10 season openers under the dean of the LSC coaches.
  • MSU has now lost back-to-back season opening games for the first time since the 1999 and 2000 seasons when it lost at Division I Texas State twice.
  • The Mustangs also suffered their first loss at AT&T Stadium and the Lone Star Football Festival with the loss to TSU, making their record 2-1 for both.
  • MSU was held to just 79 yards rushing against the Texans, the first time since rushing for 86 yards in a 27-7 loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Nov. 6, 2010 and the lowest since picking up 47 yards in a 20-17 loss at Angelo State on Sept. 26, 2009.
  • Midwestern was also held without a rushing touchdown for the first time since the 2010 loss at TAMUK.
  • MSU running back Keidrick Jackson was held to his second-lowest rushing total when carrying the ball at least 10 times in a game with his 46 yards on 17 carries against Tarleton State. His lowest came last year when he rushed 13 times for 32 yards at Tarleton.
  • Jackson remains second on the MSU Career Rushing list with 2,873 yards and needs 718 yards to pass the school record of Daniel Polk (2004-07) of 3,590 yards.
  • Junior receiver Joe Sanders caught eight passes for 102 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown against TSU. It bettered his entire 2012 season totals of seven receptions for 86 yards and a TD.
  • Sanders' 102-yard receiving performance was the first 100-yard receiving game for MSU since Vernon Johnson posted a 109-yard game against Abilene Christian on Oct. 22, 2011 that included an MSU, LSC and NCAA record 99-yard TD reception.
  • Senior kicker Greg Saladino scored six kicking points for 173 career points, third among MSU kickers and eighth on the all-time MSU scoring chart. Saladino needs two points to pass Dominic Rhodes (1999-2000) who is seventh on the all-time list with 174. He needs four points to Kristian Foster (2004-06) who has 176 and is sixth all-time and second among kickers.
  • MSU senior safety Taiyon Jackson and sophomore whip Marqui Christian each tallied 13 tackles to lead the team.
  • The trip, 885 miles from Wichita Falls, is the longest for Midwestern State since the resumption of football in 1988. The previous long came in last season's playoff game at Indianapolis (882 miles) and is the longest MSU has traveled for a regular season game since visiting Silver City, N.M. on Oct. 13, 2001 to face Western New Mexico (703 miles).
  • Midwestern State has tabbed the 2013 season as the Football Silver Celebration, recognizing the 25 years since the return of football to MSU in 1988.
