OKLAHOMA CITY -- Ashley Cottrell provided the scoring punch while a band freshmen provided the muscle to lift Midwestern State to a 3-0 win over Oklahoma Christian Saturday night at Eagle Soccer Field.
"We started six freshmen and I'm very proud of the way they played," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said.
The frosh corps of
Abbey Barnum, Lizzie Navarette,
Katie Huff,
Jackie Bucy,
Alyssa Parkhill and
Haley Britton provided the spark for the banged up Mustangs, who evened their season record at 2-2.
Meanwhile Cottrell, who is slowed by injuries of her own, gritted her way to give MSU a 1-0 advantage in the 38th minute.
"Ashley has been pretty banged up, so we didn't start her," Trimble said. "She received the ball 35 yards out, beat four girls down to the end line then surprised the keeper with a shot to the near post. It was a very nice goal."
The Lone Star Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year was at it again in the second half when she served a quick through ball to junior
Katy Catney, who worked her way to a break away goal for her first tally of the season in the 85th minute.
She returned the favor in the final minute of the contest skipping a corner kick to Cottrell, who ran onto it for her second goal of the contest.
"The midfield played very well tonight," Trimble said. "
Morgan Hannon won everything in the air and was the biggest impact player we had tonight."
Senior goalkeeper
Kallie Essary made three saves to notch her second shutout of the season.
The Mustangs return to the MSU Soccer Field for a pair of games next weekend playing host to East Central (Okla.) Friday at 5 p.m. then face Rogers State (Okla.) at 1 p.m.
