Mustangs open 2013 season against Texans in Arlington

SATURDAY... Defending Lone Star Conference Co-Champion No. 13 Midwestern State opens the 2013 season in a Lone Star Conference game against Tarleton State in the Lone Star Football Festival. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

WHERE TO FIND THE GAME…

95.5 ESPN: The broadcast features the play-by-play voice of two-time Lone Star Conference Broadcaster of the Year Bill Powers. He is joined by KAUZ TV-6 anchorman Chris Horgen, who serves as color analyst.

TELEVISION: The game is being televised live in Wichita Falls by KFDX-TV Channel 3. The game will also be shown on a delayed basis by Comcast Sports Net Houston on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. Andy Justus and Michael Spencer have the call. There is no streaming video of the game.

SCOUTING THE TEXANS …

Tarleton State starts the season as well on Saturday. The Texans were 6-4 in 2012 and handed MSU its only regular season loss last year with the 20-17 win on opening night in Stephenville.

The Texans are under the command of head coach Cary Fowler, who sports a 15-17 record starting his fourth seasons at TSU. Fowler is a former defensive coordinator at Midwestern State.

The Texans return senior quarterback Aaron Doyle from the team that averaged 462.5 yards a game. Doyle threw for 1,579 yards with 10 touchdowns last season. Also back is Jerome Regal, the running back who was averaging 127.5 yards and led the league before suffering an injury in game two and was lost for the season.

The receiving corps returns junior Clifton Rhodes III who averaged 69.4 yards a game last season, and senior Jeken Frye who posted 67.4 yards a contest.

Defensively, first team All-LSC linebacker senior Marquis Wadley returns after leading the team with 83 total tackles, as does first team All-LSC corner Dashaun Phillips also returns.

TSU is averaged 462.5 yards of total offense a game (second in LSC, 20th nationally) to go with 34.5 points an outing (third in LSC, 35th nationally), while allowing 360.4 yards defensively (four in LSC, 65th nationally) and 28.3 points an outing (fifth in LSC, 86th nationally).

All-Time Series: Tarleton State leads the series 18-8-1. The Texans snapped a two-game MSU win streak with the 20-17 win in Stephenville on Sept. 8, 2012.

  • The Midwestern State Mustangs were open on the first week of the Division II football season.
  • MSU sported a record of 9-2 last year, with a 7-1 slate in the conference.
  • MSU is ranked 13th in both the AFCA Coaches Poll and 12th in the D2Football.com poll.
  • The Mustangs, who have won back-to-back Lone Star Conference titles and shares of three of the last four LSC championships.
  • The Mustangs look to avenge last season's 20-17 loss in Stephenville, the only MSU regular season loss the last two seasons.
  • When the Mustangs meet the Texans Saturday at AT&T Stadium, it marks the 28th time the teams have met on the gridiron – the longest active series in Midwestern State history.
  • Midwestern State returns the top scoring offense (38.63 ppg) and top rushing offense (323.9 ypg) in the league.
  • The Mustangs have the top two returning rushers from a season ago in running backs Keidrick Jackson and Chauncey Harris.
  • Jackson, a senior All-American from Arlington, Texas/Bowie, rushed for 123.1 yards a game last year to rank 16th in NCAA Division II.
  • Harris, a junior from San Antonio, Texas/Converse Judson, was third in the LSC and 62nd in NCAA II in rushing with 79.9 yards a contest.
  • Jackson led the LSC in scoring and ranked third in Division II averaging 11.45 points a game with his MSU record 21 touchdowns.
  • Jackson, whose 1,354 yards was the second-most in MSU history last season, needs 764 yards to break the MSU school career rushing record held by quarterback Daniel Polk (2004-2007) of 3,590 yards. With 282 points, he also needs just 10 points to break the school career scoring record held by kicker Jose Martinez (2007-2010) of 291 points.
  • MSU also returns its top two tacklers from last season in senior free safety Taiyon Jackson of Bakersfield, Calif./West and senior linebacker Gadrian Muse of Brookshire, Texas/Royal, both notching 71 tackles.
  • MSU is 2-0 under the dome at AT&T Stadium, beating Texas A&M-Commerce in the LSFF the last two seasons.
  • The Mustangs have held a Top 25 ranking in the AFCA Coaches Poll for 24 consecutive reporting periods, and have held a Top 25 ranking in 46 of the last 51 reports. MSU has received a vote in 85 of the last 86 polls that have been released.
  • Midwestern State has tabbed the 2013 season as the Football Silver Celebration, recognizing the 25 years since the return of football to MSU in 1988.
