TOPEKA, Kan. – The 27th-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs collected their sixth straight win Friday as they beat Washburn (Kan.) 8-1 at the Washburn Tennis Complex.
The 12-5 Mustangs dropped the Lady Blues to 1-12 on the season with the win.
Midwestern swept the doubles and lost only at No. 1 singles in taking the non-conference victory.
MSU's top team in doubles,
Sarita Adhikary and
Lauren Pineda, beat WU's Kirsten Holle and Jodie Blackim 8-4, as the Mustangs Madeline Schorlemmer and
Kayla Casey shutout Casyn Buchman and Sophie O'Neill 8-0 at No. 2.
Taylor Coffman and
Fatima Clementino won at No. 3 over Gwen Shepler and Nzingha Banks 8-2.
"Our doubles did a great job in getting us out front," said MSU coach
Scott Linn. "And our Madeline and Kayla at No. 2 executed at a very high level and led us on."
Coffman led the way for Midwestern in singles, downing Buchman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.
Kayla Casey followed at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Blackim, with Schorlemmer taking No. 4 over Holle 6-3, 6-1.
"Taylor played a great match that wasn't as close as the scores indicate," said Linn. "It really showed me what a great competitor she has become."
Lauren Pineda won picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Shepler at No. 5, and
Kendra Casey stepped up at No. 6 to defeat Ashlynn Sutton 6-0, 6-1.
The Lady Blues only point came at No. 1 with O'Neill beating Adhikary 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
The Mustangs continue their northern road trip on Saturday morning at 11 when they face the Central region's top-ranked team, No. 35 Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo.
