Mustangs fall in LSC Tournament Championship match to Abilene Christian 5-0

SOUTHLAKE, Texas – The No. 27-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs saw their 10-match winning streak come to an end as the No. 5 Abilene Christian Wildcats claimed a 5-0 victory and the Lone Star Conference Championship Saturday afternoon at the Southlake Tennis Center.

The Mustangs fall to 16-6 on the season and must wait until Tuesday's NCAA Division II Tournament selection to learn of their next opponent.

Abilene Christian won it's 13th straight match and the LSC's automatic bid to the tournament as the Wildcats go to 26-5.

The Mustangs dropped all three doubles matches to the Wildcats, setting up the sweep.

"ACU has a good team, but we came out flat in doubles," said MSU coach Scott Linn.  "We just came back from a late night and didn't respond."

"I'm so pleased at the way the team's performed all season that I can't hang my head at one match," Linn added.

MSU had beaten Tarleton State 5-4 late Friday night heading into the title match.

The Wildcats collected two wins in singles as well before the match was halted.

ACU's Hannah Kelley and Micah Hermsdorf opened with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles over MSU's Sarita Adhikary and Lauren Pineda.

But the Mustangs battled at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles before falling, as Kayla Casey and Madeline Schorlemmer fell 8-6 at No. 2 to Laura Mongin and Brittney Reed, while Fatima Clementino and KynZee Watson also dropped an 8-6 decision at No. 3 to Kaysie Hermsdorf and Jamie Lee Denton.

Only two matches were completed in singles, No. 1 and No. 5.

No. 32 Micah Hermsdorf beat Adhikary 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, and sister Kaysie Hermsdorf downed Pineda 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.

Midwestern was ahead or close in the other four singles points when the match was decided.

"You have to go through these situations in order to grow as a team," said Linn.  "We will be better at regionals because of it."

The Mustangs, who have been ranked second in the NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings the last three weeks behind Abilene Christian, will learn of their tournament fate on Tuesday evening at 7:00 when the pairings are announced during a selection show on NCAA.com.
