No. 27 Mustangs roll Javelinas 8-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No. 27-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs won their fifth straight on Tuesday, dispatching Texas A&M-Kingsville 8-1 in Lone Star Conference play at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs (11-5, 3-1) were in control the entire match against the Javelinas (1-8, 0-5).

"Our girls did a great job in the match today," said MSU coach Scott Linn.  "We got a lot of confidence in the way we won this one."

MSU made quick work of the doubles.

The Mustangs top team of Sarita Adhikary and Lauren Pineda handled the Javelinas' Mariaxi Herrera and Marija Dimitrovska 8-3.  MSU's No. 2 team of Madeline Schorlemmer and Kayla Casey took down Tabata Cervantez and Victoria Rios 8-2, while Taylor Coffman and Fatima Clementino shutout Ashton Garcia and Alexandra Carillo 8-0.

The wins caused the Mustangs to make changes in their lineup and allow some players to get some time.

Adhikary kept her No. 1 position and won 6-0, 6-2 against Herrera, while Coffman at No. 2 fell in three sets to Dimitrovska 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.

But spots 3-6 were shaken up and the Mustangs ran with it.

Clementino moved up to No. 3 from No. 6 and beat Cervantez 6-2, 6-0.

Kendra Casey jumped in at No. 4 to beat Rios 6-0, 6-1, while Payton Scharfenberg played her first match this spring at No. 5 and beat Garcia 6-1, 6-1.  Laure Morimont stepped in at No. 6 to defeat Carillo 6-0, 6-0.

"We have a lot of great tennis players and this was a chance to let them shine," said Linn.  "It shows how deep we are."

The Mustangs travel this weekend for a pair of out-of-region, non-conference matches starting with Washburn in Topeka, Kan., on Friday afternoon.
