WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs ended the regular season in style with a Senior Day 6-3 victory over St. Edward's on Sunday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs, ranked 24th by the ITA, upped its record to 16-5 overall. St. Edward's, ranked 25th by the ITA, fell to 6-13.
"I'm proud of the way we reversed the momentum after doubles," said MSU coach
Scott Linn. "Our seniors came back strong and brought the team to the win."
MSU trailed 2-1 after doubles after SEU's Felix Bake and Pedro Bronstrup upset No. 9
Luke Joyce and
Colby Meeks at No. 1 8-3, and the Hilltoppers James Rogers and Maximo Agoglina handed
Tomas Grejtak and
Kacper Boborykin an 8-2 loss at No. 2.
However, MSU's No. 3 team of
Kyle Davidson and
Austin Crawford handed Alexandre Bueno and Ivan Vaz an 8-3 loss.
But in singles, the Mustangs answered the bell.
Midwestern's Joyce, ranked 44th nationally in singles, beat No. 50 Rogers 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to lead the top of the lineup.
Senior Meeks, playing at No. 3, also claimed a three-set win 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 over Agoglia, while freshman Davidson, at No. 2, handed Bronstrup a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 defeat.
MSU also scored at No. 5 with
Franko Siljeg beating Bueno 6-1, 6-4, and at No. 6 with Crawford beating Adrian Garza 6-1, 3-3 as Garza retired.
St. Ed's only singles point was at No. 4 where SEU's Bake beat Boborykin in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
The Mustangs start postseason play on Friday in the Lone Star Conference Championship semifinals at the Southlake Tennis Center in Southlake, Texas.
