ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -- Midwestern State's
Katelyn Vinson homered in her fourth consecutive game and the Mustangs rallied for two runs in the seventh inning to secure a 4-2 non-conference victory over Ouachita Baptist Monday afternoon at Sully Anderson Field.
Â
Vinson, a freshman from Southlake, connected for her 10th long ball of the season to lead off the second inning to extend her current collegiate best hitting streak to eight games.
Â
The bomb gave MSU a 2-0 lead after
Kim Jerrick plated an unearned run on an errant throw in the first inning after drawing a leadoff walk as the Mustangs loaded the bases with no outs. But Ouachita Baptist's Abbi Frakes fanned
Kelley Schaefer,
Shelby Carter and
Christina Roosmalen swinging to end the threat.
Â
Frakes notched 11 strikeouts - a season high against Midwestern - and held the Mustangs to just four hits through the first six innings of play.
Â
Meanwhile, MSU starter Kat Batey coasted through the first five innings retiring 15 of the first 17 batters she faced allowing a lone single to Kailey Madden to leadoff the fifth inning.
Â
But Parrish Reed led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double to the left-field gap, advanced to third on an illegal pitch and snapped the shutout by scoring on Jocelyn Jones' bunt single to pull OBU within 2-1.
Â
Ouachita Baptist's Nici Starkey stole second and third and tied the game by coming plate ward on a throwing error after pinching for Jones to knot the game at 2-2.
Â
But the Mustangs quickly loaded the bases as
Chelsey Wall and Jerrick sandwiched singles around a pinch-hit walk by
Laci Belovsky before
Haley Howerton drew a bases loaded pass to force in the go-ahead. Senior outfielder
Courtney Bingham added a sacrifice fly to center field to give MSU a 4-2 advantage.
Â
Batey worked around an infield single in the seventh to improve to 10-4 in the circle. She allowed one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts and a walk.
Â
Vinson finished the game by going 2-for-3 at the dish adding a double in the fourth inning to notch her eighth consecutive multi-hit game. She is hitting an impressive .720 (15-for-25) with two doubles, seven homers and 15 RBIs during the tear to raise her season batting average to an LSC-best .506. Vinson is just the second freshman to hit 10 homers in a season joining Jerrick, who had 11 in 2011.
Â
Howerton added pair of singles for the Mustangs, who improved to 25-11 on the season.
Â
Midwestern takes on Henderson State (Ark.) in a twin bill Tuesday afternoon at Dee White Field in Arkadelphia. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
