LAWTON, Okla. – The No. 27-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs came through in the clutch to upset No. 19 Cameron 5-4 in Lone Star Conference action on Thursday at the Streich-Henry Tennis Center.
Freshman Madeline Schorlemmer outlasted Florencia Tornero at the No. 4 singles spot 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to pickup the final point to give the Mustangs the victory.
The Mustangs (9-5, 2-1 LSC) won their third straight match, while Cameron (12-3, 0-2) had it's two-game win streak stopped and handed the Aggies their second loss in their last nine matches.
Freshman
Lauren Pineda picked up two points for MSU in the match, teaming with
Sarita Adhikary at No. 2 doubles to beat Tornero and Laura Winter 8-4. She then took out Antonia Moberg at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-2 that evened the match at 2-all.
The Mustangs had to come from behind, scoring just the point at No. 2 in doubles.
But the singles came through for Midwestern to collect the win.
"I'm very pleased with the way we responded after being down in doubles," said MSU coach
Scott Linn. "We didn't get down and competed hard on all six courts to make the comeback."
Fatima Clementino made short work at No. 6 beating Winter 6-1, 6-0, and
Kayla Casey took down Elle Scholles 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 to set up the dramatic finish for Schorlemmer.
While it was a loss, Linn also praised senior Adhikary for taking No. 47 Amanda Moberg to three sets at No. 1 before falling 6-1, 0-6, 6-0.
"It really helped Madeline for Sarita to stay out on the court," said Linn. "She took a nationally-ranked player deep."
The Mustangs were down after No. 15 Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber downed MSU's No. 1 duo of Schorlemmer and Casey 8-0, and CU's No. 3 team of Scholles and Antonia Moberg edging
Taylor Coffman and Clementino 8-6.
Coffman also fell to Puckhaber at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-2.
The Mustangs travel to Fort Smith for a Friday afternoon match against Arkansas-Fort Smith. First serve is set for 1:30.
