WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs were easy winners over McMurry Thursday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center, beating the War Hawks 8-1.
No. 31 Midwestern (9-4 overall) fell only at the No. 3 doubles spot, while sweeping McMurry (7-3) in singles.
Once again, the South Central Regions top doubles team of seniors
Luke Joyce and
Colby Meeks led the way, winning No. 1 doubles 8-4 over Chris Breaux and Casjen Rico, then each claiming singles wins. Joyce, ranked 39th nationally, won at No. 1 over Breaux 7-5, 6-1. Meeks won at No. 2 over Felipe Cruz 6-2, 6-3.
"Another fantastic job by our seniors," said MSU coach
Scott Linn. "We did a great job as a team and I'm very happy with the way we played."
The Mustangs got strong play from freshmen
Kyle Davidson and
Austin Crawford. The duo teamed for No. 2 doubles to beat Cruz and Dani Perez 8-3, then won their singles. Davidson took Perez at No. 3, 7-5, 6-2 and Crawford beat Christiano Mendez 6-4, 6-3.
Kacper Boborykin moved up in the lineup to No. 4 singles and beat McMurry's Preston Steblein 6-1, 6-0.
"I'm very pleased with (Boborykin)," said Linn. "He's got a lot of potential and played a very mature, very focused match."
Tomas Grejtak moved into singles at No. 6 and beat Rico 6-2, 7-5.
McMurry's lone point came when Steblein and Mendez edged Grejtak and
Zack Santagate 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.
The MSU men are in action again on Friday when they face Texas-Tyler in a match at 3 p.m. The men's competition was moved from Saturday morning.
