MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Midwestern State Mustangs snapped Florida Tech's eight-match winning streak with a 7-2 victory Tuesday at the Fee Avenue Tennis Complex.
The 40th ranked Mustangs (6-2) stunned the 16th ranked Panthers (11-4) by taking all but the No. 1 match in singles and doubles.
MSU's Madeline Schorlemmer,
Kayla Casey and
Lauren Pineda came through not only with their doubles points, but winning three-set singles points as well.
Schorlemmer and Casey teamed at No. 2 doubles to beat FIT's Charlotte Fahnehjelm and Abbey Keister 8-3, while Pineda and
Fatima Clementino beat Jessica Vidmark and Flavia Zisi Tegou 8-1.
Then in singles, Casey at No. 3 downed Chloe Chanley 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, as Schorlemmer came back to take Fahnehjelm 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. Pineda stepped up at No. 5 to beat Keister 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The Mustangs got two-set wins from
Sarita Adhikary and
Kendra Casey. Adhikary defeated Stephanie Dohner 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2, while
Kendra Casey handed Katie Close a 6-2, 6-3 loss at No. 6.
The only points not won by MSU were up top as
Taylor Coffman was beaten by the top player in the South region, fourth ranked Kristina Huba 6-1, 6-2. Coffman and Adhikary also fell to Huba and Dohner at No. 1 doubles 8-0.
The Mustangs continue their Florida swing on Wednesday in Winter Park, facing No. 19 Rollins.
