PHOENIX -- Midwestern State's
Kim Jerrick blasted her home run of the season and drove in four runs while teammate
Elena Bennett made a bit of history as the Mustangs rolled to a 10-0 run-rule win in five innings over Western New Mexico Friday afternoon in the GCU Invitational at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
Â
The Mustangs improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating host Grand Canyon (Ariz.) 8-2 earlier in the afternoon. MSU will face the same two teams Saturday at 11 a.m. against GCU and against WNMU at 1 p.m.
Â
Jerrick belted her 22nd career home run over the left-field fence go give the Mustangs and early 3-0 advantage in the third inning, then delivered the big blow in a six-run fourth frame on a two-run double to the left-field gap.
Â
Meanwhile, Bennett was 2-for-2 with a pair of infield singles while stealing second and third in the first inning then adding thefts in the fourth and fifth inning to set a new single game MSU mark. She also became the first Midwestern State player to nab 100 stolen bases in a career currently with 101.
Â
The senior from Carrollton came around to plate her 143rd career on
Kelley Schaefer's run-scoring single up the middle in the fourth inning to match former All-American third baseman Kristen Stonecipher, who scored 142 runs from 2005-08.
Â
The Mustangs logged 12 hits for the second consecutive game which proved more than enough for freshman Kat Batey.
Â
The Plano product notched a shutout in her collegiate debut limiting Western New Mexico to four hits in five innings of work to move to 1-0.
Â
Schaefer joined Jerrick and Bennett with two hits each while senior second baseman
Carey Campbell was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
