Mustangs fall to #20 Angelo State in LSC Tourney quarterfinals

CANYON, Texas -- Midwestern State's Nicole Marzik ripped six of her team-high 10 kills to help the Mustangs take the opening set over No. 20-ranked Angelo State Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament at the WTAMU Fieldhouse.

But MSU was unable to sustain the momentum as the Rambelles recovered to claim a 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-7 win to advance to a semifinal matchup against the winner of the Texas Woman's/Texas A&M-Kingsville quarterfinal contest.

The Mustangs used a hot start to build a 20-10 edge riding Marzik's strong arm while forcing Angelo State in to eight attack errors as senior Caitlin Wallace and Michelle Blount contributed a pair of blocks each.

The 'Belles rallied to stave off four set points before Marzik put the opening stanza away.

MSU slugged 16 kills in the first set, but struggled mightily for the remainder of the match combining for a total of 21 kills over the final three frames for a .011 team hitting percentage.

Meanwhile, the 'Belles surged behind the efforts of Maddie Huth (15 kills, 8 total blocks), Arielle Bond (14 kills, 2 total blocks) and Cerbi Ritchey (10 kills, 3 total blocks) rocking their way to a .245 attack percentage to take control of the match.

Wallace became just the third player in program history to amass 300 career blocks finished with seven kills and six blocks, while senior right-side hitter Michelle Blount closed with six kills.

Freshman Sarah Garfield and Marija Jovanovic added five kills, while junior libero Casey Fletcher led back row efforts with 19 digs.

Midwestern State closes the campaign with a 17-13 mark which represents the most wins since the 2008 squad posted a 25-9 record.
