Midwestern silences Savage Storm, 79-72

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State built a big lead and led from tip-to-buzzer taking a 79-72 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State in the finale of the Comfort Inn/Ashbrook Classic Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs claimed consecutive wins for the first time this season to improve to 3-2, but will hit the road to face Emporia State (Kan.) next Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.

Senior guard Kirsti Degelia poured in a team-high 18 points while connecting three 3-pointers in 31 minutes, while junior Shatoia Gober delivered an all-around performance with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Midwestern scored the final nine points of the first half extending its lead to 34-21 after junior Jenae McJunkins connected on a 3-pointer with 20 seconds to go in the first half.

The Mustangs poured it on at the start of the second half pushing the advantage to 50-27 after Degelia connected on a pair of free throws just over four minutes after the break.

But Southeastern came storming back fueled by a pair of treys by Cheree Kiser and another from Natalie Ruud to cut the MSU lead to 56-47 with 8:34 to play.

The Mustangs quickly pushed the lead ack out to 15 points at 64-49 when Taylor Dowd pumped in a trey from the top of the key with 7:06 to play.

SOSU kept chipping away thought cutting the lead to five points on two occasions in the final four minutes of play, but that's as close as it would get.

Senior forward Andrea Carter pitched in 12 points and four rebounds in 17 minutes, while Lynn Lumpkin-Boozer added nine points and four rebounds in 11 minutes off of the bench.

Breana Small-Peppers was 9-for-9 from the floor to finish with a game-high 23 points to pace Southeastern.
