Garfield's nine blocks not enough, MSU falls to 'Belles in 4

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Angelo State's Cerbi Ritchey and Maddie Huth combined for 25 kills to lead the 19th-ranked Rambelles to a 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-10 win over Midwestern State Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Rambelles improved to 17-6 on the season and to 9-3 in Lone Star Conference play while Midwestern State dropped to 12-10 and 4-8.

The efforts spoiled a standout performance by MSU middle blocker Sarah Garfield.

The freshman from Holliday notched a season-high nine blocks which are the most for an MSU player in a four-set match since Sesley Graves had nine at Washburn (Kan.) during the 2008 campaign.

Garfield also proved efficient on the attack putting down seven kills with a single miscue in 19 attacks for a .316 attack percentage.

Senior Marija Jovanovic and sophomore Marissa Olivares paced the MSU attack with eight kills each as Olivares narrowly missed her third consecutive double-double but still managed a match high 23 digs to lead the back row. Jovanovic was also solid at the net with four blocks.

The Mustangs came out swinging in the opening set riding the momentum of Friday night's comeback effort in a win over Tarleton State.

Senior middle blocker Caitlin Wallace put down four of her seven kills in the opening frame as the Mustangs used consecutive combined block by Garfield and senior Beatriz Villalba to mount a 4-0 run to take control of the frame at 16-14.

MSU pushed the advantage to 24-20 on a service ace by Wallace before the Rambelles fought off three set points. Finally, Jovanovic put away the set with her second kill of the night.

The Mustangs struggled to a .031 team hitting percentage over the final three sets after posting a .200 mark (15 kills, 6 errors in 45 total attacks) in the opener.

Ritchey paced the 'Belle attack with 14 kills and three blocks while Huth added 11 kills and three blocks.

Maggie Jo Keffury notched a double-double with 34 assists and 22 digs, while Kaelen Valdez had 22 digs as well to lead ASU on the back row.

Midwestern State hits the road for a pair of LSC road contests this week taking on Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday and Texas Woman's on Saturday.
