GAME WEEK: Midwestern State hits road to face WT, ENMU

SCOUTING THE LADY BUFFS
West Texas A&M is winless in its last five matches sandwiching scoreless draws against Texas A&M-Commerce and Eastern New Mexico around a three-game skid with road losses at Eastern New Mexico (4-1), Angelo State (2-1) and MSU (1-0). Junior midfielder Jessie Thomas leads the WT attack with three goals with single tallies coming from sophomore midfielder Emily Krenek, sophomore midfielder Dominique Premac, junior forward Jasmin Schultz and senior defender Berklee Watson. The Lady Buffs have tallied multiple goals in just one of 14 matches this season while suffering eight shutouts. Senior goalkeeper Yvette Bedoy leads a stout WT defensive unit permitting a 0.91 goals against average and a .831 save percentage. She boasts seven clean sheets.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State and West Texas A&M meet for the 32nd time on the pitch Friday night in Canyon. The Mustangs and Lady Buffs are knotted at 15-15-1, but WT carries an 11-2-1 advantage on its home field. The Mustangs broke through with their first win in their eighth trip to Canyon taking a 3-2 result on Oct. 26, 2007 then claimed a second victory by a 4-1 margin in 2012.
 
LAST TIME OUT VS. WEST TEXAS A&M
Midwestern State junior midfielder Katy Catney knocked in her fourth career goal against West Texas A&M providing the lone tally of a 1-0 victory for the Mustangs on Oct. 13 in Wichita Falls. Catney lined up a free kick from 25 yards out in the 84th minute and tucked it under the crossbar to elude WT goalkeeper Yvette Bedoy. MSU goalkeeper Kallie Essary made three saves to salt away her third clean sheet of the season.

SCOUTING THE ZIAS
Eastern New Mexico battles Lone Star Conference leaders Angelo State and Midwestern State in its final two home matches of the season this weekend at the ENMU Soccer Field. The Zias are winless despite forcing their last three opponents to double overtime earning draws at Midwestern State (1-1) and West Texas A&M (0-0) with a defeat at Angelo State (1-0). Junior forward Maurisa Jones paces the ENMU's attack with five goals with help from junior midfielder Alyssa Prince (3 goals, 3 assists) and sophomore midfielder Carolyn Armijo (2 goals, 4 assists). Sophomore Alyxandra Ortiz boasts a 0.75 goals against average with a .865 save percentage as the Zias' primary goalkeeper. Eastern New Mexico averages 1.23 goals per game and lets in 1.08.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State and Eastern New Mexico meet for the 14th time on the pitch Sunday afternoon in Portales. The Mustangs control an 8-3-2 edge in the series including 3-2-1 advantage on the Zias' home pitch.
 
LAST TIME OUT VS. EASTERN NEW MEXICO
Midwestern State and Eastern New Mexico played to a 1-1 draw earlier this month in Wichita Falls. MSU senior forward Emily Saville converted a through ball from Tatyanny Griffiths for her first goal of the campaign in the 51st minute before ENMU's Maurisa Jones answered with the equalizer in the 79th minute. The Mustangs controlled a 25-8 shot advantage placing 12 on target.
 
 
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State closed a four-match home stand with a 2-1-1 mark finishing with a 1-0 result over Texas Woman's on Sunday. The Mustangs return to a perfect 4-0 road mark which includes wins over Colorado Mesa, Oklahoma Christian, Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Commerce. Sophomore Ashley Cottrell leads the attack with an LSC leading seven goals to go along with two assists. Other multiple-goal contributors include senior Tatyanny Griffiths (3 goals, 2 assists), junior Katy Catney (2 goals, 2 assists), sophomore Kensli Pounds (2 goals, 2 assists) and sophomore Morgan Hannon (2 goals). Senior goalkeeper Kallie Essary anchors a solid back unit with a 0.71 goals against average and an .851 save percentage. Along with starters Anna Molen, Alex Edwards, Katie Huff and Haley Britton, the defensive group boasts five clean sheets this season. Midwestern State scores 1.43 goals per game and allows 0.86.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Sophomore forward Ashley Cottrell finished an Emily Saville cross redirected by Tatyanny Griffiths for her seven goal of the season in a 1-0 win over Texas Woman's Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Senior goalkeeper Kallie Essary notched two saves to book her fifth shutout of the season.
 
THE LSC RACE
Midwestern State trails Angelo State by five points with three matches to play. The Rambelles boasts a 6-1 mark (18 points) to lead the league followed by MSU (4-2-1, 13 points), Texas A&M-Commerce (3-3-1, 10 points), Eastern New Mexico (1-2-3, 6 points), West Texas A&M (1-3-2, 5 points) and Texas Woman's (1-5-1, 4 points). The top four teams advance to the LSC Postseason Tournament set for the site of the league champion from Nov. 8-10.
 
MUSTANGS IN SOUTH CENTRAL REGION RANKINGS
Midwestern State opened at No. 6 in the first release of the South Central Region Rankings. Colorado Mines leads the way followed by Metro State (Colo.), Fort Lewis (Colo.), St. Edward's (Texas), Angelo State (Texas), MSU, Texas A&M-Commerce, Dallas Baptist (Texas), Colorado-Colorado Springs and New Mexico Highlands. The top six sides advance to the NCAA Division II playoffs beginning the weekend of Nov. 15-17 at campus sites.
 
MIDWESTERN IN NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Senior goalkeeper Kallie Essary ranks 43rd in goals against average (0.708) and 46th in save percentage (0.851). Sophomore forward Ashley Cottrell rates 71st in total goals (7.0) and 96th in goals per game (0.5).
 
THREE... DOT... THOUGHTS...
Midwestern State split a pair of Lone Star Conference matches last week falling to Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday then recovering for a win over Texas Woman's... The Mustangs remain in second place at 4-2-1 with 13 points and trail league leading Angelo State (6-1) by five points... Midwestern needs one win to post its seventh 10-win campaign in the last eight years and 11th in the last 13... MSU is 6-3 in matches decided by one goal this season and each of their last five outings have been by 1-goal deficits... Midwestern State is 5-3-1 at home and 4-0 in road contests... The Mustangs close the regular season with three of its last four on the road beginning with a pair of games this weekend at West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico... Sophomore forward Ashley Cottrell notched her team leading seventh goal in the fourth minute of a 1-0 win over Texas Woman's on Sunday...
