AUSTIN, Texas -- Another match against a nationally ranked opponent, another win for a resilient Midwestern State side.
Sophomore
Ben Clarvis and
Len Smith tallied second-half goals to carry the Mustangs to a 2-1 win over No. 4 St. Edward's Saturday afternoon at Chan-Lewis Field.
"I like the fact that our guys just keep coming back," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "We bounced back, we persevered and played with a bit of an attitude. I'm so proud of the guys and am very happy for it."
Midwestern faced more adversity when junior defender
Kalen Ryden was whistled for a hand ball in the box in the 40th minute after a ball bounded back through the box on a blocked shot.
"He turned his head and the ball hit his arm," Elder said. "His arm was against his body and the assistant referee said he was in the 18."
SEU's Jack Blanton converted the penalty kick for his second goal of the season to send the Hilltoppers into the intermission with a goal lead.
Midwestern State answered quickly with the equalizer less than two minutes into the second half.
Clarvis collected a loose ball in the box and drove it into the net for his first goal of the season.
Smith then finished a cross from sophomore
Idrissa Camara for his seventh goal of the campaign to provide the difference in the match in the 73rd minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Nick Petolick was credited with two saves on his way to improving to 7-0-1 since taking over starter duties.
"Nick made a great one-on-one save when (SEU defender Matt McLaughlin) got behind us," Elder said. "He saved our butts because he was behind our defense. It was because of that that we won the game."
Midwestern State plays host to Texas A&M International Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
