Johns scores twice to lead #7 MSU past pesky Dustdevils, 3-2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Junior Dan Johns converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute to give No. 7-ranked Midwestern State its first and only lead of the match in a 3-2 win over  Texas A&M International Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

"This prepares us because if we are fortunate enough to get into the playoffs, this is what we're going to get whether we play here or somewhere else," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "The intensity is going to be high and the pressure is going to be high. That means the work rate has to be high, too."

MSU extended its unbeaten streak to nine matches and now has won each of its last four games to improve to 9-3-1 on the season.

Texas A&M International (7-7) didn't make it easy scoring a pair of impressive goals in the opening half as Jovany Macias found the net in the game's 8th minute for his fourth goal of the season and Adiran Elicerio notched his second tally of the year in the 16th minute.

But just as in its season, the Mustangs just found a way to make the best of the situation.

Sophomore Idrissa Camara answered the first goal heading in a nicely struck corner kick off t he boot of Andrew Power in the 14th minute then Johns one-time in his first goal of the night on a second equalizer in the 23rd minute.

The teams played evenly throughout the opening half with matching 7-7 shot totals before MSU took the edge 11-6 following intermission.

A&M International's Camilo Botero was called for a hand ball in the center of the box in the 88th minute resulting in Johns' game winner.

"We were resilient again and we fought back," Elder said. "We hung in there, but credit the opponent. They played really, really hard. They have seven losses and don't see how. We're happy to get the win."

The Mustangs hit the road to take on Southern Nazarene Tuesday night in Bethany, Okla. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
