Mustangs roll past Incarnate Word for 8th straight win, 70-54

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State erupted for a 14-0 run midway through the second half to put away Incarnate Word 70-54 in Lone Star Conference play Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs extended their season-best winning streak to nine games while improving to 15-3 on the season and to 10-2 in league play.

Sophomore forward Andrea Carter notched her 10th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards while junior Kirsti Degelia continued to fill in admirably with her point guard duties for injured teammate Dianna Jones. The Krum native finished with 12 points and eight assists and remained active on the defensive end with five steals and two blocks.

But it was a pair of efforts off of the bench which provided a lift for MSU which lead from start to finish to avenge one of its rare losses this season.

Sophomore guard Lisa Hampton drilled a pair of 3-pointers in the first half on her way to a 12-point effort and pulled down a career-high six rebounds to go along with three blocked shots and a pair of steals.

Sophomore forward Taylor Dowd knocked a career0-high 13 points with two blocked shots in 21 minutes of floor time.

Dowd sparked a 7-2 spurt in the closing minutes of the opening half  with a pair of transition layups to give the Mustangs a 39-28 lead at the half.

Incarnate Word closed to within five points when Ashlyn Green hit a jumper in the paint to pull the Cardinals to within 50-45 with 10:48 to play.

But Degelia canned a pair of free throws before Shatoia Gober and Dowd connected on consecutive treys to kickstart a 14-0 run as the Mustangs pushed the advantage to 66-47 on yet another Dowd lay-in with 5:25 to play.

Midwestern State goes for its ninth straight win Saturday afternoon against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
