LAWTON, Okla. -- Craig Foster's free throw with 3.3 seconds to play was just enough charity for Cameron to come away with a 64-63 win Wednesday night at Aggie Gym.
It was the Aggies' first win in the Red River Rivalry since 2006 - a span of nine games - as CU won its fifth consecutive game to improve to 10-5 on the season and to 6-3 in Lone Star Conference play.
The loss was MSU's second in the last three games as it fell to 11-5 and 7-2, but remain atop the league standings tied with Incarnate Word.
"Every game you lose is a tough one. We had our chances. We definitely fought our way back into the ball game," MSU coach
Nelson Haggerty said. "We were able to create some turnovers, but didn't finish on the other end well enough."
The Aggies chose to run the clock down with the game tied at 63-63 as Foster pulled up for a jumper and appeared to shuffle his feet when Midwestern's
Corbin Thomas challenged his shot. But a foul was whistled sending Foster to the line for the difference in the game.
But Cameron did create the opportunity by claiming a pair of clutch offensive rebounds in the game's final 90 seconds.
"We were just unable to come up with the big rebound which is very uncharacteristic of our ball team," Haggerty said. "Give credit to Foster for coming up with the big plays. I thought Cameron was the tougher team in a lot of areas. We have to get better. A lot better."
Foster and the Aggies also benefited from a tough call at the end of the first half when he appeared to draw a player control foul when lowering his shoulder into MSU's
Cam Adderley. But Foster emerged for a pair of free throws to give the Aggies a 27-24 halftime edge.
The Mustangs bounced back to lead by as many as 38-35 when
Derek Kaster hit a lay up with 14:46 to play then MSU edged ahead 61-60 on a
Keith Spellman free throw with 2:36 to pla.
But the Aggies connected on seven second half 3-pointers and converted second-chance points in the closing seconds. Andrew D. Thomas tapped in a missed trey with 1:54 as CU reclaimed the lead then Foster grabbed another offensive rebound with 20 seconds to play.
Foster led all scorers with 19 points, while Thomas added 11 points and four rebounds to lead Cameron.
Junior guard
Cam Adderley connected on 7-of-12 shots from the field to lead MSU with 16 points and four rebounds while senior guard
Kevin Grayer added 15 points and four assists. Kaster added 11 points and five rebounds off of the bench.
Midwestern State and Cameron tangle again Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
