WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Kirsti Degelia poured in a career-high 27 points to lead the Mustangs to a 78-71 win over Tarleton State in Lone Star Conference play Saturday night at D.L.Ligon Coliseum.
The win snapped a nine-game winning streak for the conference leading TexAnns as it was also the first MSU win over Tarleton State since the 2004-05 season - a span of 14 games.
The Mustangs matched a season-best winning streak at four games -- since taking back-to-back losses to Central Oklahoma and Eastern New Mexico to improve to 11-3 on the season and to 6-2 in league play.
Tarleton State's inside-outside combo of Peyton Adamson (22 points, 3 3-pointers) and Kiara Wright (16 points, 20 rebounds) helped the TexAnns get out to a 6-point lead when Adamson drained a long trey for a 31-25 lead with 4:24 remaining in the opening half.
But
Taylor Dowd and Degelia connected on consecutive shots from beyond the arc to re-tie the game. Degelia canned a 30-footer at the first-half buzzer to give the Mustangs a 38-36 advantage at the half.
Degelia went 8-of-17 from the field and hit a season-high three treys to go along with six assists, five rebounds and two steals.
The Mustangs methodically worked their way to a double-figure advantage and led 59-49 when
Dianna Jones swished a 3-pointer from the left wing with 8:02 to play.
But the TexAnns rallied on a 12-2 run to force the ninth tie of the game at 61-61 on Brianna Bledsoe's jumper at the 2:59 mark. The teams traded points and Tarleton's Cheyenne Berry hit one of two free throws with two seconds left to force the overtime.
Adamson scored the first points over the extra frame 12 seconds into the overtime, but that would be Tarleton's last lead of the night.
Sophomore forward
Andrea Carter hit a jumper in the lane and Degelia converted a layup in transtition before Carter hit a pair free throws to cap off the 6-0 run for a 71-67 lead with 3:27 to play.
Carter notched her seventh double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while junior forward Skyler Warric scored 12 points and pulled down four rebounds off of the bench.
Midwestern State takes on Texas Woman's University Wednesday night at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
