Mustangs limit Tarleton State to historic low 34 points

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State got really defensive in a 50-34 win over Tarleton State Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

How defensive? The Texans matched a program low for scoring output. Tarleton hadn't scored as few as 34 points since Oklahoma Christian turned the trick in 1988. The point output was also the fewest for a Lonn Reismann-coached team bettering a 38-point showing at West Texas A&M two seasons ago.

The Mustangs limited the Texans 12 first-half which were the fewest since MSU held Southeastern Oklahoma to a dozen opening half points in 2009-10.

In the process, MSU bounced back to improve to 11-4 on the season and remained atop the Lone Star Conference standings at 7-1 while sending the Texans to their first three-game losing streak 2008-09. Tarleton moved to 8-5 on the season and to 2-4 in the LSC. Texans are now 0-3 away from Wisdom Gym.

Senior Corbin Thomas sparked the Mustangs with 16 points and eight rebounds highlighted by a thunderous dunk off of a Kevin Grayer inbound pass in the first half.

Junior guard Cam Adderley scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds while junior guard Keith Spellman added 10 points and five rebounds off of the bench.

Sophomore guard Derell Gibbs impacted the game without scoring a single point as the Burkburnett High product pulled down eight rebounds, dished out four assists and made four blocks in 32 minutes.

De'Andre Upchurch scored 13 points to lead the Texans, who finished the night a shooting a miserable 16.9 percent from the field (10-of-59).

Midwestern State enjoys an 11-day hiatus before taking on Cameron on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Aggie Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
