COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wayne State (Neb.)'s Lauren Sieckmann powered down 15 kills to lead the hot swinging 14th-ranked Wildcats past Midwestern State 25-23, 25-22, 25-17 in the UCCS Invitational Saturday at the Gallogly Events Center.
Wayne State (5-2) hit .257 as a team and fended off a determined MSU effort in the opening two stanzas.
The Mustangs, who were once again led by senior outside hitter
Shelbi Stewart's 12-kill effort, rallied for four consecutive points fueled by back-to-back kills by junior
Caitlin Wallace for a 22-all tie in the opening set.
But the Wildcats took three of the final four points for the 25-23 set win.
The Mustangs played Wayne State tight in the second frame and took a 17-13 lead before the Wildcats rattled off six consecutive points during a 9-1 run to take control of the set. MSU staved off two set points before falling by a 25-22 set.
Wallace added six kills and added four total blocks while junior middle blocker
Michelle Blount and junior outside hitter
Brandi Flores had five kills each.
Sophomore setter
Kristan Aduddell was also aggressive on the attack with five kills while dishing out 27 set assists.
Senior defensive specialist
Taylor Parker led back row efforts with 12 digs while Stewart pitched in nine digs and libero
Casey Fletcher added seven.
Midwestern State closes tournament play against Colorado-Colorado Springs tonight at 8 p.m.
