GAME DAY: No. 4 Mustangs open at Tarleton State

SATURDAY... No. 4 Midwestern State opens the 2012 season on the road at Tarleton Memorial Stadium in Stephenville to face the Tarleton State Texans in Lone Star Conference play.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

SCOUTING THE TEXANS…
 
The Texans also open the season on Saturday when they host the Mustangs.  Tarleton is coached by former MSU defensive coordinator Cary Fowler.  The Texans were 6-5 last season, but won their last five games after falling to Midwestern 44-13 at Wichita Falls.  Tarleton returns nine defensive starters led by LSC Defensive Back of the Year Dashaun Phillips and linebacker Marquis Wadley.  Offensively, the Texans return star receiver Clifton Rhodes to go with new quarterback Aaron Doyle.
All-Time Series: Tarleton State leads the series, 17-8-1, Midwestern has won two straight.
 
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • Saturday's game opens the 25th season of the modern era of Midwestern Football, when football returned to campus after a 32-year hiatus on Sep. 3, 1988.
  • The Mustangs enter the season at No. 4 in the AFCA Division II Football Poll, the highest preseason ranking in MSU history.
  • MSU has been ranked in the last 11 polls (last seven in the Top 10), in 33 of the last 38 poll and has received a vote in 72 of the last 73 AFCA coaches polls.
  • The Mustangs are also ranked No. 5 in the D2Football.com Poll.
  • MSU is coming off a 10-1 season that featured the first undefeated regular season in school history.
  • The Mustangs are 10-0 in season opening games under coach Bill Maskill.
  • MSU is 16-8 in season opening games since the resumption of football in 1988 and have won the last 11 season openers.
  • This is the 27th meeting against the Texans, dating back to the days when Midwestern was Wichita Falls Junior College and Tarleton was John Tarleton Agricultural College.  It's the longest active series for MSU.
  • Midwestern has been golden in the months of August and September under coach Bill Maskill.  MSU is 37-7 (.841) in games played before Oct. 1 in the Maskill era.  In fact, since 2006, the Mustangs are 26-1 before Oct. 1.
  • MSU is unbeaten in its last 11 regular season games dating back to a 27-7 loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Nov. 6, 2010.
  • The Mustangs were the top offense in NCAA Division II last season at 531.9 yards a game, but MSU was also fourth in all of college football in 2011 trailing Houston (599.1 ypg), Baylor (587.1) and Oklahoma State (545.9).  The Mustangs were just ahead of Oregon (522.8).
  • The Mustangs were the top scoring offense in Division II with 48.6 points a game and were third in all of college football behind Houston (49.3 ppg) and Oklahoma State (48.7).
  • Midwestern ranked second in rushing offense in Division II last season with 323.5 yards a game and were 11th in all of college football.
  • The Mustangs return 84 percent or 3,000 of the 3,558 rushing yards from last season.
  • The Mustangs return five All-Americans from 2011.  Quarterback Brandon Kelsey was fourth in the Harlan Hill voting and was third team on the Don Hansen squad and honorable mention by the Beyond Sports College Network. Guard Ken Van Heule was second team on the Hansen and third team on the BSCN team.  Running back Keidrick Jackson was an honorable mention on both the D2Football.com and Hansen teams.  Center Justen Tyler was an honorable mention on the Hansen and BCSN teams and deep snapper Randall Arbuckle was first team on the BSCN team.
