GAME DAY: Mustangs set for UCCS Invitational

THIS WEEK... Midwestern State competes in the UCCS Invitational Friday and Saturday in Colorado Springs. The Mustangs open tournament with games Friday against Fort Lewis (Colo.) at 10 a.m. and Franklin Pierce (N.H.) at 5:30 p.m. before closing versus Wayne State (Neb.) and Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday at 12:30 and 8 p.m., respectively. All games will be played at the Gallogly Events Center.

The Skyhawks (1-3) opened the season by splitting four matches at the Oklahoma Panhandle State Challenge in Goodwell last weekend taking 3-0 wins over Bacone and Oklahoma Panhandle State before falling in five sets to Fort Hays State and in three sets to Colorado Christian. Fort Lewis, which went 5-21 overall and 2-16 in RMAC play in 2011, is paced by sophomore outside hitter Ashley Wells (2.82 k/s, .075 atk pct.) and sophomore setter Ciara Krening (7.64 set asts/s) on the attack while junior libero Jenna Kinzer leads the back row with 5.18 digs per set.

FRANKLIN PIERCE (N.H.) (Friday/5:30 p.m.)  Live Stats  |  Live Video (Pay Per View**)
The Ravens (3-1) opened the 2012 campaign with consecutive four-set wins over West Chester (Pa.), Dowling (N.Y.) and St. Augustine's (N.C.) before suffering a sweep to Quincy (Ill.) last weekend at the Marauder Clash in Millersville, Pa. FPU is paced on the attack by junior outside hitter Natasha Ray (2.43 k/s / .198 atk pct) and freshman middle hitter Lina Kleinschmidt (2.07 k/s / .282 atk pct) while junior libero Lauren Miller paces the back row with 3.20 digs per set. Kleinschmidt has accounted for over half of the Ravens' blocks at 0.73 blocks per set.

WAYNE STATE (NEB.) (Saturday/12:30 p.m.)  Live Stats  |  Live Video (Pay Per View**)
The Wildcats (3-1) enjoyed three straight-set victories over Dallas Baptist, Colorado Mesa and St. Joseph's (Ind.) before falling 3-1 to Tarleton State last weekend at the Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colo. Wayne State, which carries a No. 12 AVCA D2 ranking, has advanced to the last seven NCAA II Central Regionals after finishing with a 23-8 mark last season. The Wildcats return four starters in senior middle blocker Alex Armes (1.31 k/s and 1.23 b/s), junior outside hitter Cori Hobbs (3.15 k/s), senior right-side hitter Melanie Placke (2.54 k/s) and junior setter Tatum Wroblewski. They are bolstered by freshman outside hitter Lauren Sieckmann (3.69 k/s) and redshirt freshman setter Leisa McClintock (9.31 a/s). Redshirt freshman libero Courtney VanGroningen paces the back row with 3.77 digs per set.

COLORADO-COLORADO SPRINGS (Saturday/8 p.m.)  Live Stats  |  Live Video (Pay Per View**)
The Mountain Lions (1-3) suffered defeats to three nationally ranked opponents last weekend at the Grand Canyon Invitational. UCCS went down in straight sets to No. 11 Cal State-San Bernadino, No. 24 Grand Canyon and No. 25 UC-San Diego but did claim a 3-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona. UCCS boasts a balanced attack with six different players averaging between 1.18 and 1.75 kills per set paced by senior setter Lindsey Stich at 6.25 assists per set. Senior Nikki Kinzer (14 blocks), senior Amy Einspahr (11 blocks) and senior Megan Koop (11 blocks) provide a net presence while redshirt freshman libero Katie Maguire leads back row efforts with 5.25 digs per set.
All-Time Series: UCCS leads the series 3-0.

A LOOK BACK... Midwestern State turned in a 1-3 mark last weekend at the Rattler-Hilltopper Classic. The Mustangs defeated Southeastern Oklahoma 3-1, but suffered setbacks to St. Mary's (3-0), St. Edward's (3-0) and Southwestern Oklahoma (3-1).
 
NOTEWORTHY... 
  • Midwestern State posted a 1-3 mark at the season opening Hilltopper/Rattler Classic.
  • Junior transfer outside hitter/setter Courtney Haney narrowly missed a triple-double finishing with nine kills, 24 set assists and 13 digs in a 3-1 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Aug. 31.
  • Haney posted three consecutive double doubles at St. Mary’s (10 set assists, 10 digs), against
    Southeastern Oklahoma (24 set assists, 13 digs) and at St. Edward’s (15 set assists, 10 digs).
  • Senior outside hitter Shelbi Stewart posted the fourth best single match hitting efficiency performance in school history putting down 16 kills in 24 attack attempts without an error Saturday against Southwestern Oklahoma. It was the best errorless match in school history with a minimum of 14 attacks and trailed only Sydney Haisler (.766 vs. Harding on 9/22/00), LaToya Terry (.714 (11-1-14) vs. Southeastern Oklahoma on 11/4/04) and Abbi Meyer (.692 (19-1-26) at Wayland Baptist on 9/4/04) in single match hitting percentage.
  • Sophomore libero Casey Fletcher notched a collegiate career best 28 digs Friday against Southeastern Oklahoma before recording 16 digs against St. Edward’s and 17 against Southwestern Oklahoma to finish the weekend with a 4.50 digs per set average.
  • Sophomore setter Kristan Aduddell closed the weekend with a solid .375 set percentage while averaging a team-best 6.00 set assists out of the 6-2 system.
  • Haney recorded a solid .365 set percentage while averaging 1.50 kills and 2.79 digs per
    set as an all-around performer.
