WELCOME HOME: No. 14 Mustangs host Incarnate Word for home opener

SATURDAY... No. 14 Midwestern State (2-1, 2-1) gets a chance to come home for the first time this season as the Mustangs play host to the Incarnate Word Cardinals.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. on Joe Golding Field at Memorial Stadium.

100.9 BOB-FM: The broadcast features the play-by-play voice of two-time Lone Star Conference Broadcaster of the Year Bill Powers. He is joined by KAUZ TV-6 anchorman Chris Horgen, who serves as color analyst.

ON TELEVISION: The game is being televised live by Time Warner Cable's Texas Channel, Digital 888 in Wichita Falls, San Antonio, Austin, Waco, Temple, Killeen, Corpus Christi, Rio Grande Valley, Laredo and most other Texas markets.  It is Digital 185 in Dallas and 24 in El Paso.  Dan Hawkins handles the play-by-play, with Skip Boyden the color analysis and Andy Austin on the sidelines.

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS…
 
Incarnate Word is 1-3 on the season and is coming off their first-ever shutout, a 24-0 loss to West Texas A&M at Benson Stadium in San Antonio.  UIW is 0-2 in Lone Star Conference play.  UIW is led on the ground by senior running back Trent Rios who is averaging 59.2 yards a carry.

UIW is averaging 256.8 yards of total offense a game to go with 12.5 points an outing, while allowing 368.5 yards defensively and 31.0 points an outing. 

All-Time Series: Midwestern State leads the series, 3-0, 1-0 in Wichita Falls.
 
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • The Mustangs moved up to No. 14 in the latest AFCA Division II Coaches Poll.  They were No. 15 last week after opening the season No. 4.
  • MSU has been ranked in the last 14 polls (including seven in the Top 10), in 36 of the last 41 polls and has received a vote in 75 of the last 76 AFCA coaches polls.
  • The Mustangs are also ranked No. 14 in the D2Football.com Poll.
  • Junior runningback Keidrick Jackson is the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his play against Texas A&M-Kingsville.  He ran for 156 yards on 18 carries and scored four touchdowns in leading No. 15 Midwestern State to a 45-28 win at Texas A&M-Kingsville.  Jackson's four touchdowns and 24 points against the Javelinas are the most for an NCAA Division II player this season.  Jackson's 73-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter stymied a TAMUK comeback attempt and helped the Mustangs to the best team rushing game in the conference this season with 421 yards.  Jackson, who leads the LSC with 82.7 yards a game, posted the eighth 100-plus rushing game of his career.  He now stands eighth on the MSU career rushing list with 1,721 yards, and is third on the MSU career scoring list with 196 points.
  • Junior kicker/punter Greg Saladino is the Lone Star Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his action at TAMUK.  He nailed a 27-yard field goal and connected on all six point-after-touchdown attempts as the No. 15 Midwestern State Mustangs beat Texas A&M-Kingsville 45-28.  Saladino has connected on all 12 of his PATs this season and is 5-of-5 in field goals as well.  Additionally, Saladino punted five times for a 39.4 average with a long punt of 46 yards and two punts inside the 20.  Four of the five punts were fair caught.  Saladino leads LSC kickers in scoring with 9.0 points a game and is second in the league in punting with a 41.1 yard average. 
  • Conway now has 182 interception return yards on seven interceptions (the seven picks are fifth all-time). 
  • The winningest coach in MSU history, Bill Maskill won his 80th game at Midwestern with the win over A&M-Commerce.  Maskill is 81-33 in his 11th season at MSU, 94-41 in his 13th season as a head coach.
  • Midwestern has been golden in the months of August and September under coach Bill Maskill.  MSU is 39-8 (.830) in games played before Oct. 1 in the Maskill era.  In fact, since 2006, the Mustangs are 28-2 before Oct. 1.
  •   The Mustangs return five All-Americans from 2011.  Quarterback Brandon Kelsey was fourth in the Harlan Hill voting and was third team on the Don Hansen squad and honorable mention by the Beyond Sports College Network. Guard Ken Van Heule was second team on the Hansen and third team on the BSCN team.  Running back Keidrick Jackson was an honorable mention on both the D2Football.com and Hansen teams.
