MSU can't sustain quick start, falls to Lions 3-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State couldn't sustain the momentum of a quick start Friday night against Texas A&M-Commerce as the Lions came away with a 16-25, 26-24 , 25-22, 25-16 Lone Star Conference win at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs, who fell to 3-11 on the season and to 1-5 in league play, play host to Texas Woman's University Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Senior outside hitter Shelbi Stewart powered down five of her team-high 14 kills in the opening set as the Mustangs blitzed A&M-Commerce with 13 kills and a stellar .321 team hitting percentage while frustrating the Lions into a 10 errors and a negative team kill rate (-.091).

But the Mustangs were unable to convert a set point to take a 2-0 lead as A&M-Commerce peeled off the final three points to take the second frame 26-24.

The Lions rode the wave of momentum to a stellar .294 hitting percentage in the third set notching 12 kills while committing just a pair of errors to muscle their way to another tight 25-22 lead.

A&M-Commerce libero Michaela Spicer put the match away by keying an 8-point run with three service aces at the line to stake the Lions to a commanding 11-3 edge in the fourth and final set.

Junior setter/outside hitter Courtney Haney notched her first triple double of the season with 10 kills, 18 set assists and 12 digs while sophomore setter Kristan Aduddell completed a double-double with 29 set assists and 11 digs.
