WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State couldn't sustain the momentum of a quick start Friday night against Texas A&M-Commerce as the Lions came away with a 16-25, 26-24 , 25-22, 25-16 Lone Star Conference win at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs, who fell to 3-11 on the season and to 1-5 in league play, play host to Texas Woman's University Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Senior outside hitter
Shelbi Stewart powered down five of her team-high 14 kills in the opening set as the Mustangs blitzed A&M-Commerce with 13 kills and a stellar .321 team hitting percentage while frustrating the Lions into a 10 errors and a negative team kill rate (-.091).
But the Mustangs were unable to convert a set point to take a 2-0 lead as A&M-Commerce peeled off the final three points to take the second frame 26-24.
The Lions rode the wave of momentum to a stellar .294 hitting percentage in the third set notching 12 kills while committing just a pair of errors to muscle their way to another tight 25-22 lead.
A&M-Commerce libero Michaela Spicer put the match away by keying an 8-point run with three service aces at the line to stake the Lions to a commanding 11-3 edge in the fourth and final set.
Junior setter/outside hitter
Courtney Haney notched her first triple double of the season with 10 kills, 18 set assists and 12 digs while sophomore setter
Kristan Aduddell completed a double-double with 29 set assists and 11 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker
Kasey Decker added nine kills while junior middle blocker
Caitlin Wallace posted eight kills.
Sophomore libero
Casey Fletcher paced back row efforts with 15 digs.
Rachel Robertson put down 14 kills to pace three players with 10-or-more kills for Texas A&M-Commerce which improved to 12-3 on the season and to 4-2 in the LSC.
