No. 16 Mustangs take on A&M-Commerce at Cowboys Stadium

THURSDAY... No. 16 Midwestern State (0-1, 0-1) looks to bounce back from a rare season opening loss when it meets Texas A&M-Commerce (0-2, 0-0) in the first game of the Lone Star Football Festival at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.  It's also the first-ever national television appearance for the Mustangs.  Kickoff is set for 7:06 p.m.

100.9 BOB-FM: The broadcast features the play-by-play voice of two-time Lone Star Conference Broadcaster of the Year Bill Powers. He is joined by KAUZ TV-6 anchorman Chris Horgen, who serves as color analyst.

TELEVISION: The game is nationally telecast on the CBS Sports Network as the NCAA Division II Game of the Week and is syndicated by the NCAA.  Cincinnati Bengals announcer Brad Johansen has the play-by-play, with former Minnesota Vikings running back Doug Chapman providing the analysis and Lisa Byington on the sidelines.  The telecast may be seen on CBS Sports Network (DirecTV 613, Dish 158), in Wichita Falls on KJBO, My TV 35 (channel 7 on cable) and statewide on Time Warner Cable's Texas Channel (digital 888 most of state, Dallas 185, El Paso 24).

SCOUTING THE LIONS…
 
Texas A&M-Commerce plays its third game of the season on Thursday night carrying an 0-2 record against the Mustangs.  A&M-Commerce is coached by former Baylor and Kentucky coach Guy Morriss.  The Lions were 1-9 last season, and lost their first eight games including the 63-17 loss against Midwestern in the first Lone Star Football Festival game.  A&M-C is coming off a 27-16 loss to Texas-San Antonio in the Alamodome last Saturday.  The Lions are led by junior quarterback Deric Davis who has thrown for 313 yards in two games, with three touchdowns and three interceptions.  Senior receiver Tyler Rawlings is his primary target with 11 receptions for 113 yards, while sophomore Tevin Godfrey has seven receptions for 50 yards including two TDs.  Defensively, senior linebacker Danny Mason and junior safety Joel Wren lead the Pride.  Mason has 25 tackles in two games (12.5 average) with 3.0 tackles for -10 yards and a sack for seven yards lost.  Wren has 21 tackles (10.5 tpg).
All-Time Series: Texas A&M-Commerce leads the series, 11-5, Midwestern has won five of the last six games.
 
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • Midwestern State is coming off a season-opening loss for the first time since 2000 and the first time ever in the Bill Maskill era.
  • Including his two seasons at Southeast Missouri State, coach Bill Maskill has never lost the first two games of a season.
  • The Mustangs slipped to No. 16 in the latest AFCA Division II Coaches Poll after opening the season No. 4.
  • MSU has been ranked in the last 12 polls (including seven in the Top 10), in 34 of the last 39 polls and has received a vote in 73 of the last 74 AFCA coaches polls.
  • The Mustangs are also ranked No. 18 in the D2Football.com Poll.
  • Last season's win over Texas A&M-Commerce at Cowboys Stadium was the first neutral site win for MSU since reinstating football in 1988.  MSU is now 1-3 in neutral site affairs.
  • The Mustangs are 4-1 against A&M-Commerce under coach Bill Maskill, with the only loss coming on Sep. 10, 2005 in Commerce 27-25.
  • This is the 17th meeting against the Lions, dating back to 1947, the first season then Hardin College played a four-year college schedule.  The series continued until 1952 and did not resume until MSU joined the Lone Star Conference in 1997.  The series was interrupted following the 2005 game when A&M-C rotated off the schedule after being moved into the LSC North Division.  A&M-C won the first 10 games of the series, while MSU has taken five of the last six contests.
  • Midwestern has been golden in the months of August and September under coach Bill Maskill.  MSU is 37-8 (.822) in games played before Oct. 1 in the Maskill era.  In fact, since 2006, the Mustangs are 26-2 before Oct. 1.
  • The Mustangs return five All-Americans from 2011.  Quarterback Brandon Kelsey was fourth in the Harlan Hill voting and was third team on the Don Hansen squad and honorable mention by the Beyond Sports College Network. Guard Ken Van Heule was second team on the Hansen and third team on the BSCN team.  Running back Keidrick Jackson was an honorable mention on both the D2Football.com and Hansen teams.  Center Justen Tyler was an honorable mention on the Hansen and BCSN teams and deep snapper Randall Arbuckle was first team on the BSCN team.
