EDMOND, Okla. - No. 3 Central Oklahoma rallied for four runs in the sixth and seventh innings and claimed an 8-6 win on Brittany Weaver's two-run walk-off blast Wednesday afternoon at Broncho Softball Field.
Â
The comeback spoiled a solid start by MSU freshman
Brenna Hennan, who had limited NCAA Division II's leader in runs and home runs to just a pair of second inning singles through the first five innings.
Â
The Mustangs had wasted little time in establishing a lead as junior first baseman Christian Roosmalen jumped started the team with a solo homer to left field in the second inning. It was the first of a season-high four hits for the transfer from Southern Mississippi.
Â
Roosmalen continued her onslaught in the fourth inning by keying a three-run frame with a two-run double to the left-field gap as the Mustangs led 4-0.
Â
Hennan retired nine of 10 batters after working her way out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the second inning as she got Hannah Justice to roll into a fielder's choice before Devyn Frazier popped up to end UCO's lone three through the first five innings.
Â
The Bronchos broke through in the sixth inning as Kayce Raines drew a leadoff walk and Nathalie Timmermans single through the left side before Kacie Edwards drilled the first pitch she saw over the center field fence to narrow the lead to 4-3. UCO would tie the game later in the sixth on a Frazier's sacrifice fly to center field.
Â
The Mustangs answered the rally in the seventh as
Elena Bennett reached on a leadoff infield single before
Mallory Mooney delivered her second homer of the season down the left-field line to stake MSU to a 6-4 lead.
Â
It wasn't enough as four consecutive Central Oklahoma batters reached in the bottom of the seventh after Hennan got Raines to pop out to third to start the inning.
Â
Timmermans singled to right field and scored on Edwards' triple to the right-field gap. Megan Whitmire tied the game at 6-6 on single through the right side before Weaver belted her fifth homer of the season to left field to end the game.
Â
The win was the 33rd consecutive for UCO which improved to 35-3 on the season. The Mustangs slipped to 23-22.
