Mooney becomes MSU's all-time RBI leader as MSU takes Game 1 from Javs 10-7

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Mallory Mooney's bases loaded, bases clearing double highlighted a six-run second inning as Midwestern State held on for its seventh straight win 10-7 over Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday night in Game 1 at Hubert Field.

It was the seventh straight win for the Mustangs who improved to 21-20 on the season and to 11-10 in Lone Star Conference play. MSU closes out the three-game series with Texas A&M-Kingsville with a second game Friday night and a single game Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Mooney, a senior from Mesquite, now has 173 career RBIs to become the program's top run producer passing former All-American Kristen Stonecipher who logged 172 RBIs from 2005-08.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second as seven straight hitters reached after Texas A&M-Kingsville starter Denise Arnold retired the first two batters she faced to open the inning.

Christina Roosmalen and Courtney Ford reached on singles before Carey Campbell loaded the bases on a walk. Kim Jerrick and Elena Bennett drove in runs on an infield single and a hit batsman respectively before Mooney cleared the bases with a double to center field.

Texas A&M-Kingsville cut the lead in half on Yvette Berlanga's three-run homer in the third inning to chase MSU starter Brenna Hennan, who allowed three runs on four hits in three inning with four strikeouts before giving way to Lindsi Glenn.

The Javelinas benefited from a pair of balk calls on illegal pitches in the fourth inning to pull within 6-4.

Glenn was called for four balks in the game with three of them producing runs for TAMUK, but the Mustangs posted singles runs in the fifth and sixth and two more in the seventh to stymie the Javelinas' comeback threat.

Glenn improved to 18-10 on the season while allowing four runs - all earned - on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings of relief.

Bingham and Roosmalen paced the Mustangs' 14-hit attack with three hits each while Jerrick, Bennett and Kelley Schaefer had two hits apiece.

Denise Arnold took the loss for TAMUK to fall to 7-13 allowing 10 runs - nine earned - on 14 hits with three strikeouts and four walks in the complete game.

The Javelinas dropped to 17-26 and 5-16.
