Fort Hays edges Mustangs in seventh, 2-1

DENTON, Texas - Callie Wright's run-scoring single to center field plated Amanda Vaupel with the winning to lift Fort Hays State to a 2-1 win over Midwestern State Friday in the opening game of the 2012 Best Western Premier Spring Fling.

The Mustangs (8-5) take on Texas-Permian Basin tonight at 6:45 p.m. at the North Lakes Park complex located at 2001 West Windsor Drive in Denton, Texas.

The rally spoiled a solid start from MSU freshman Brenna Henna, who allowed just a solo homer by Chelsey Rottinghaus, as she limited the Tigers to one run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk over 4 2/3 innings.

MSU cracked the scoreboard first with an unearned run off of FHSU ace Maddie Holub, who improved to 3-1 on the season allowing an unearned run on five hits with six strikeouts.

Sophomore catcher Kim Jerrick reached on an error, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kelley Schaefer before scoring on a Courtney Ford single.

But Rottinghaus drilled a leadoff homer in the fifth inning to knot the game at 1-1 and Holub would limit the Mustangs to a Jerrick over the final three innings allowing the Tigers to rally in the seventh.

Vaupel's one-out double eluded the glove of MSU center field Elena Bennett, and then Wright drilled a two-out game-winning single to center field.

Lindsi Glenn suffered the loss to fall to 7-4 permitting a run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
