KINGSVILLE, Texas – The 19th ranked Midwestern State Mustangs battled high winds and one of the longest trips of the season, but suffered little from either as they shut out Texas A&M-Kingsville 8-0 in Lone Star Conference play Saturday.
The Mustangs (3-2, 2-0) won all seven matches played and got a default in the No. 3 doubles. No contest was played at No. 6 singles.
"I'm very pleased with their performance," said MSU Coach
Scott Linn. "Our ladies did a great job of battling through the trip and the 40 mile an hour winds that made it very difficult."
The Mustangs set the tone early with strong wins over A&M-Kingsville (0-6, 0-2) in doubles play.
The No. 1 team of
Sarita Adhikary and
Lindsey Holcomb did not lose a game in an 8-0 win over Danielle Moree and Lindle Pennington. The No. 2 team of Rozieke van Rensburg and
Kendra Casey then beat Victoria Rios and Sondra Cui 8-1.
On the singles side, won all 10 sets played with six of those by a 6-0 count.
Van Rensburg battled with Moore at No. 1 singles, winning 6-4 in the first set and rolling 6-0 in the second.
At No. 2 Holcomb beat Rios 6-1, 6-0 as well as Casey at No. 4 who took down Whitney Roth by the same score.
Taylor Coffman won at No. 3 over Lindle Pennington 6-2, 6-0, while
Lindsey Buenger dropped Sonra Cui 6-0, 6-0.
"The ladies played so well in the high winds," Linn commented. "Serving was very difficult and we had very few hiccups."
The Mustangs are in action again next Saturday when they open at home against Cowley County (Kan.) in both women's and men's action.
