GAME DAY: Mustangs meet West Texas A&M

Midwestern State returns home to continue Lone Star Conference action as they host the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M under the Dome.

MSU is 5-1 overall, 1-1 in LSC play, and is coming off a 75-63 victory at Texas A&M-Kingsville last Saturday afternoon, while West Texas A&M is 2-6 overall, 0-2 in the LSC after dropping a double-overtime 77-71 decision at Angelo State.

Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

Midwestern State is off to its best start in a dozen years.  MSU has it's second-best six-game record in history at 5-1 and is aiming to match the program's best seven-game record.

The Mustangs are paced by the powerful duo of junior Kirsti Degelia and sophomore Andrea Carter.

Degelia leads the Mustangs offensively. The junior from Denton, Texas/Krum is scoring 16.2 points a game, and averages 3.7 assists a contest and is third on the team with 4.5 rebounds a game.

Carter, who has won the LSC Defensive Player of the Week award twice this year and the LSC Offensive Player of the Week award once, has posted four double-doubles in six games to open the season.  The sophomore from Angleton is second on the team with a 15.5 scoring average, leads the squad with 12.3 rebounds and 3.2 steals a contest.

Sophomore Shatoia Gober of Waco, Texas/Midway contributes 9.7 points a contest to go with her 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals an outing.  She is also shooting 50 percent from the floor (22-of-44).

Sophomore Diana Jones of Hewitt, Texas/Midway is averaging 8.8 points a game, adds 3.2 assists and has nailed 8-of-17 three point attempts (.471) to go with her 2.0 steals a contest.

Midwestern State is receiving votes once again in the WBCA's ESPN/USA Today Division II Coaches Poll, but is inching toward the Top 25.  It's the third week this season for the Mustangs who received votes for five consecutive weeks in January and February last season.
 
MSU is averaging 74.7 points with 41.5 rebounds a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 62.7 points a contest.

ABOUT THE LADY BUFFS

West Texas A&M opened the season with three straight losses at the Disney Tipoff Classic West and has struggled since.

The Lady Buffs of coach Krista Gerlich are at 2-6 on the season, 0-2 in LSC action after falling at home to Abilene Christian 81-76 last Wednesday night and 77-71 in double-overtime last Saturday night at Angelo State.

The Lady Buffs are paced by junior Lacee Logan of Sudan, Texas.  She's averaging 14.4 points a game to go with her 4.5 reoubnds and 2.6 assists.  Logan is hitting 50 percent from the 3-point arc (20-of-40), averaging 2.5 treys an outing.

Sophomore Chontiquah White of Dallas, Texas/Life School Oak Cliff adds 12.5 points and leads the team with 7.9 rebounds.

Devin Griffin, a junior from Lubbock, Texas/Coronado via North Carolina State, chips in 12.2 points with 6.2 boards, while dishing 3.2 assists with 1.0 steals a game.

The Lady Buffs average 63.4 points a game, while allowing 64.1.

ABOUT THE SERIES

West Texas A&M leads the series 40-13, but the teams have split the last four games -- each winning at home over the last two seasons.  WT has a 17-8 lead in the series at Ligon Coliseum, but Midwestern won the last two meetings in Wichita Falls, 88-76 on Jan. 11, 2012 and 62-57 on Jan. 29, 2011.
