PORTALES, N.M. -- Midwestern State's first appearance in the USA Today Sport's Top 25 has not been a great experience.
Eastern New Mexico earned just its second win of the season to knock of the 25th-ranked Mustangs 70-62 Monday afternoon at Greyhound Arena.
"We're not in a rhythm at all. The mentality of this team is nowhere near where it needs to be," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "We've lost a little fire in us and we're not showing what we're capable of especially position by position when we're more talented in some areas and not taking advantage of that. We don't have a killer mentality."
The Mustangs, who fell to 7-3 on the season and to 2-2 in Lone Star Conference, continue on the road with two more league games later this week. MSU plays at Abilene Christian Thursday before taking on Angelo State Saturday in San Angelo.
Eastern New Mexico poured in a season-high 70 points while shooting a campaign-best 54 percent from the field to roll to their second consecutive win to improve to 2-10 on the season and to 1-3 in LSC play.
"Hats off to Eastern, we haven't seen them shoot the ball like this all year. We pressured them and they hit some contested shots that they normally don't hit," Johnson said. "We didn't get down and guard then we didn't block out. The short shots got us on the blocks outs. We didn't push back. We worried about it going in and then we would just try to out jump people. We're not doing our work to get us a look. When they had second opportunities on those shots, they capitalized.
Midwestern State controlled a 34-32 edge at the half and pushed the advantage to 50-45 on
Ashley Rush's second 3-pointer of the game with 11:09 to play.
But Eastern New Mexico outscored the Mustangs 21-10 over the final 6 1/2 minutes of the second half to take control of the contest.
"We keep talking about how young this team is and we are," Johnson said. "That should play to our advantage sometimes when it comes to outplaying people, but we're not understanding the grind of the season and what we need to do on the road. Especially against teams like Eastern."
Junior guard
Kirsti Degelia paced the Mustangs with 15 points and six rebounds as MSU struggled its way to a 35-percent shooting effort from the floor. Midwestern struggled even more at the charity stripe connected on 13-of-22 for 59.1 percent.
Sophomore guard
Shatoia Gober added 10 points and four rebounds while sophomore guard Dianna pitched in nine points and Rush added eight.
Ashlee Pierson led a trio of Zias in double figures with 18 points and was joined by Tara Johnson (16 points) and Alexa Candelaria (13 points).
