Gritty Mustangs take down Texas A&M-Kingsville, 67-64

KINGSVILLE, Texas -- Midwestern State continued to show a high comfort level in two traditionally tight spots -- playing on the road and playing from behind.

The Mustangs erased a double-figure deficit for the third consecutive game to come away with a 67-64 Lone Star Conference win Saturday afternoon at Steinke Center.

"That's the good thing about this basketball," MSU coach Nelson Haggerty said. "We've shown some resolve and toughness to overcome big deficits to come away with victories. This is a big time road win for us."

MSU finishes the second longest road trip from the start of a season with a 5-2 mark while moving to a conference-best 2-0 start.

The Mustangs face West Texas A&M in its home opener Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. or 25 minutes following the conclusion of the women's game which tips at 5:30.

Texas A&M-Kingsville road a strong start from junior forward Jamahl Brown, who scored all of his team-high 14 points in the first half including a buzzer beating 3-pointer to give the Hoggies a 34-30 lead at the intermission.

The Mustangs struggled throughout the opening half to a 29.6 field goal percentage taking their only lead when Eddie D'Haiti opened the game with a short jumper.

"They did a great job of guard our sets," Haggerty said. "They are the best defensive team in the league and they showed it tonight. We made some big plays when we needed to."

Sophomore guard Keith Spellman kept the Mustangs close in the opening half by working his way to the free throw line at a 9-for-10 clip to notch 11 of his team-high 15 points before intermission.

Junior point guard Monzaigo Williams shook off a sluggish start to ignite the Mustangs at the beginning of the second half.

The Palmdale, Calif. native threaded a pair of long assists to D'Haiti and Derek Kaster before completing a three-point play on a fast break to give the Mustangs a 37-36 lead. He then found Derrell Gibbs open on a transition trey to push the advantage to 40-36 just two minutes into the second half.

Texas A&M-Kingsville answered with a 11-2 run of its own to surge to a 48-43 lead with 11:45 to play, but MSU kept grinding.

The Mustangs connected on 5-of-6 free throws after making three consecutive defensive holds and Spellman buried his only 3-pointer of the game to give MSU the lead for good at 51-48 with 9:21 to play.

Midwestern pushed the lead to as many as 6 points with two minutes remaining before the Javelinas responded with a Donte McGee 3-ball and junior guard Rashad Basey raced past the MSU defense for a layup to pull TAMUK to within 65-64 with 1:07 to play.

Basey missed a pair of free throws with 41.5 seconds to go after a pair of controversial calls which could fouled out Corbin Thomas and D'Haiti in the final minute.

The Mustangs gathered the rebound to a drained the clock before Williams drove the ball into the lane with just under 10 seconds to play. His shot was strong off of the glass, but MSU's Kevin Grayer gathered in the board.

Gibbs sank two free throws with 3.8 seconds remaining to seal the win.

"Our guys stepped and made big plays defensively at the end," Haggerty said. "We will only get better."

Grayer added 11 points and six rebounds off of the bench, while D'Haiti had eight points and five rebounds in 25 minutes. Williams pitched in six points and a game-high seven assists.
