WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Corbin Thomas went from hero to goat and back to hero again all in a span of 29 seconds in overtime Wednesday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The senior forward missed a point blank dunk with 33 seconds remaining then atoned with a big block of Mason White to preserve a 65-62 win over West Texas A&M.
MSU improved to 6-2 on the season while moving to 3-0 in the Lone Star Conference. The Mustangs enjoy a 10-day break before taking on Arkansas Tech in a rematch of last season's South Central Region championship game on Sat., Dec. 15.
Thomas combined with junior
Eddie D'Haiti to give the Mustangs the edge on the inside by combining for matching double doubles. Thomas finished with a team-high 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots while D'Haiti posted 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
For the fourth straight game, Midwestern State dug its way out of a double figure deficit in the first half as the Buffs used an 11-2 run to take a 16-6 lead on Nate Drayton's jumper with 10:10 to go in the first half.
But the Mustangs scored the final six points of the opening stanza to close to within 27-24 at halftime.
MSU led by as many as seven points in the second half, but West Texas A&M would regain the lead on Dumars' follow layup with 2:10 to play.
Midwestern's
Kevin Grayer knocked down a pair of free throws, while WT's Kennon Washington went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe in the final minute and Grayer missed a layup at the buzzer to face the teams into overtime.
Washington hit a pair of free throws and hit a jumper just since the arc at the top of the key to give the Buffs a 62-59 advantage in overtime.
But MSU sophomore guard
Keith Spellman drilled a big 3-pointer at the top of the key and D'Haiti followed Spellman's driving layup attempt on the next possession with a dunk to put the Mustangs up 64-62.
The Mustangs forced a turnover on WT's next possession to set up Thomas' split heroics in the closing 30 seconds.
MSU junior point guard
Monzaigo Williams added 11 points and dished out four assists, while Washington paced the Buffs with 23 points and five rebounds.
West Texas A&M dropped to 7-2 on the season and to 1-2 in league play.
