ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

Midwestern State looks to bounce back from its lone loss of the season last weekend at the Colorado State-Pueblo Al Kaly Shriners Classic.

The Mustangs defeated Oklahoma Christian 71-56  in the tournament opener before falling to the host Thunderwolves 72-69.

The loss was just the second regular season non-conference defeat suffered by the Mustangs since the start of the 2009-10 campaign and the first since falling to Fort Hays State (Kan.) in the 2010-11 season opener.

The Mustangs fell out from No. 23 to out of the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Division II Poll leaving West Texas A&M as the only Lone Star Conference team receiving a national ranking. The Buffs check in at No. 20 while MSU and Tarleton State are receiving votes.

Sophomore guard Keith Spellman, an Al Kaly Shriner's Classic all-tournament pick, leads the Mustangs in scoring with 16.8 points per game. The transfer from Western Texas College paced MSU in three of four outings this season while connecting at a 55-percent clip (11-for-20) from the arc.

Senior guard Kevin Grayer adds 13.0 points per game showing efficiency with a 54.3 field goal percentage, while senior forward Corbin Thomas adds 12.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

Junior point guard Monzaigo Williams gives the Mustangs a fourth double-digit scoring option at 10 points a game while dishing out six assists a contest, while junior forward Derek Kaster is the Mustangs' top bench option averaging 8.3 points and pulling down 6.5 boards a contest.

MSU opens Lone Star Conference play with a pair of road tests Thursday against Incarnate Word and Saturday at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
