ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State looks to bounce back from its lone loss of the season last weekend at the Colorado State-Pueblo Al Kaly Shriners Classic.
The Mustangs defeated Oklahoma Christian 71-56 in the tournament opener before falling to the host Thunderwolves 72-69.
The loss was just the second regular season non-conference defeat suffered by the Mustangs since the start of the 2009-10 campaign and the first since falling to Fort Hays State (Kan.) in the 2010-11 season opener.
The Mustangs fell out from No. 23 to out of the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Division II Poll leaving West Texas A&M as the only Lone Star Conference team receiving a national ranking. The Buffs check in at No. 20 while MSU and Tarleton State are receiving votes.
Sophomore guard
Keith Spellman, an Al Kaly Shriner's Classic all-tournament pick, leads the Mustangs in scoring with 16.8 points per game. The transfer from Western Texas College paced MSU in three of four outings this season while connecting at a 55-percent clip (11-for-20) from the arc.
Senior guard
Kevin Grayer adds 13.0 points per game showing efficiency with a 54.3 field goal percentage, while senior forward
Corbin Thomas adds 12.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Junior point guard
Monzaigo Williams gives the Mustangs a fourth double-digit scoring option at 10 points a game while dishing out six assists a contest, while junior forward
Derek Kaster is the Mustangs' top bench option averaging 8.3 points and pulling down 6.5 boards a contest.
MSU opens Lone Star Conference play with a pair of road tests Thursday against Incarnate Word and Saturday at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Ouachita Baptist (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday night at Texas A&M-Commerce. Senior guard
Julian Laday poured in a game-high 21 points but it wasn't enough for the Tigers to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit to fall 69-56 at the A&M-Commerce Fieldhouse. It was OBU's first look at Division II competition as the Tigers claimed a pair of season opening wins on their home floor taking a an 84-56 decision of LeTourneau and a 108-43 win over Champion Baptist. Michael Morris leads a balanced Ouachita Baptist attack with 14.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and is joined in double figures by senior guards
Austin Mitchell (12.7 ppg) and
Nigel Ramsey (10.3 ppg). Sophomore forward
Colt Fason (9.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg), sophomore guard
Micah Delph (9.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg) and
Laday (8.3 ppg) give the Tigers balanced scoring depth. OBU averaged 82.7 points as a team and allows 56.
About the Series: Midwestern State and Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) meet for the fifth time on the hardwood Saturday night at Bill Vining Arena. The Mustangs own a 3-1 edge in the series including a 79-69 win in its only trip to Arkadelphia on Nov. 19, 1998. Richard Johnson led the way with 14 points while Charlie Bennett pitched in a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds as MSU improved to 4-0. The Mustangs claimed a 77-72 win in their last meeting with OBU on Dec. 21, 2008 at the River City Classic in San Antonio behind a 32-point, 6-assist effort by All-America guard Nolan Richardson. The Tigers' lone win of the series came in an 80-76 overtime result on Dec. 21, 2005 at the Hoop 'N Surf Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
