Mustangs recover for 73-60 win at Southwestern Oklahoma

WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- No. 22 Midwestern State recovered from 8-point second-half deficit to claim a 73-60 win over Southwestern Oklahoma Saturday night at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse.

"I was proud of the way we responded in the second half," MSU coach Nelson Haggerty said. "We had a lot of players in foul trouble and had to have underclassmen and freshmen played key minute. We were able to execute and well and made some outstanding plays."

The Bulldogs (0-2), who took a 26-20 lead into the half, used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to claim a 46-38 edge with 11:58 to play.

Rod Camphor knocked down a 3-pointer and chipped a free throw during the run on his way to a 9-point showing.

The Mustangs quickly responded with a pair of layups and two free throws by Eddie D'Haiti followed a Monzaigo Williams 3-ball as part of a 9-1 counter run to tie the game little over two minutes later at 47-47.

The Bulldogs bounced back to take a short live lead before Midwestern closed with a 26-11 extended run over the last 8 minutes to put the game away.

Senior forward Corbin Thomas connected on 7-of-10 shots from the field and narrowly missed a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds.

"He was able to work the angles and our guys fed great passes in there," Haggerty said. "He did a great job."

Williams not only played a key role in keeping the Mustangs to seven total turnovers but turned in a great all-around line with 14 points, eight assists and four steals.

"Monzaigo had a big game for us," Haggerty said. "He did everything. He was the key to getting us into our stuff and distributing the ball. He was great all around."

Senior guard Kevin Grayer pitched in 13 points while Keith Spellman added eight points on 2-of-4 shooting joining Williams and Grayer with two treys apiece.

Marin Zelalija paced Southwestern Oklahoma State with 14 points while Dominick Cornelius and Thomas David had 10 points each.
