Midwestern State plays host to a pair of non-conference matchups this weekend at the MSU Soccer Field. The Mustangs take on Southern Nazarene (Okla.) Friday night at 7 p.m. before battling Northeastern State (Okla.) Sunday at 1 p.m.

Southern Nazarene (1-10) faces its second straight nationally ranked opponent Friday night against No. 24 Midwestern State. The Crimson Storm took a 3-0 loss to then-No. 21 Lindenwood (Mo.) last Saturday after snapping an 0-9 start with a 4-0 win over Southwest Baptist (Mo.) on Sep. 27. Sophomore defender Hajime Chumpitaz paces SNU with five goals and three assists while junior defender Aziz Tapsoba adds two goals for the Crimson Storm who average 1.00 goals per game. Senior goalkeeper Blake Anderson has gone the distance between the posts lossing a 2.98 goals against average with a .612 save percentage.

The RiverHawks (7-2) begin the toughest stretch of their schedule Friday at No. 20 Incarnate Word before heading to Wichita Falls to take on 24th-ranked Midwestern State on Sunday. The difficult task continues the following week with a confernece match at No. 10 Lindenwood. Four players have accounted for 21 of NSU's 23 goals this season led by senior midfielder Bo White (9 goals, 0 assists) and sophomore forward Juan Peralta (6 goals, 2 assists) while freshman forward Joel Mendoza and junior midfielder Edgar Gonzalez have scored three goals each. Senior goalkeeper Jordan Ladbrooke has allowed nine goals in nine matches for a 1.10 goals against average with three shutouts but has struggled to a .654 save percentage.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

Midwestern State (5-1-2) returns to the comfortable confines of the MSU Soccer Field for a pair of games this weekend. The Mustangs boast a 42-1-3 mark on their venerable home pitch since the start of the 2008 season as a part of a 45-match unbeaten streak snapped earlier this season. MSU takes on Southern Nazarene for the first time since 1997 on Friday and have claimed the wins each of their last 11 matches against its Sunday opponent -- Northeastern State. Forwards Len Smith and VcMor Eligwe have led a resurgence for the Mustangs' over the last three matches. Midwestern has scored 11 goals during the stretch including three by Smith and two by Eligwe. MSU had just six total goal in the five previous games. The Mustangs continue a strong defensive legacy topping the nation in shutout percentage while ranking fourth in NCAA Division II with a 0.48 goals against average. Sam Bartek, Jevan Toledo, Eric Glad, Fernando Garza, Michael Brody and Issac Pile have all made starts on the back line. The goalkeeper tandem of Ray Clark and Nathan Kenyon have combined for six clean sheets with a combined .862 save percentage.

  • Midwestern State returned to the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Poll after a one-week hiatus at the No. 24 position.
  • The Mustangs have received a national ranking in 71 of the last 72 weeks in which it was NSCAA eligible.
  • MSU has recorded clean sheets in four of its last five matches and in seven total games this season to lead all of NCAA Division II in shutout percentage at 0.75.
