No. 11 Mustangs meet Hounds on Saturday

SATURDAY... No. 11 Midwestern State (6-1, 5-1) returns home for a Lone Star Conference matchup with Eastern New Mexico (2-5, 1-4).  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS …
 
Eastern New Mexico comes into the game with a 2-5 overall record, and a 1-4Lone Star Conference record.  ENMU has lost its last four games and is coming off a loss to then No. 17 West Texas A&M in the Wagon Wheel Game 44-21.

The Hounds are under first-year head coach Josh Lynn who has returned Eastern to a wishbone attack from the air-raid offense in place since 2008.

The Greyhounds are led by one of the top quarterbacks in ENMU history in senior Wesley Wood of nearby Muleshoe, Texas.  Wood is the Hounds all-time total offense leader and has gone from just leading the team in passing, to being the leader in rushing as well, with 133 carries for 526 yards and nine touchdowns.  He's averaging 75.1 yards a game to rank fifth in the LSC and 68th in NCAA Division II, while passing for only 911.  Last season, Wood threw for 2711 yards and rushed for only 259.

Joining Wood are three capable runners in Derek Kendall-Campbell, De'Coreyon Thomas, and Christian Long.  Campbell averages 51.6 yards a game, while Thomas has 41.5 yards an outing and Long 40.0.

Leading the Hounds defense is linebacker Perron Sellers who has 71 tackles this season, or 10.1 per game to rank second in the conference and 24th nationally.  Former receiver now linebacker Seth Bailey has 52 tackles or 8.7 per game.

ENMU is averaging 336.4 yards of total offense a game to go with 23.7 points an outing, while allowing 454.7 yards defensively and 41.1 points an outing. 

All-Time Series: MSU leads the series 13-4 and has won the last 10 meetings between the teams.  MSU is 6-2 against Eastern New Mexico in Wichita Falls.
 
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • The Mustangs moved up to No. 11 in the latest AFCA Division II Coaches Poll after being 12th last week.  They opened the season No. 4.
  • MSU has been ranked in the last 18 polls (including seven in the Top 10), in 40 of the last 45 polls and has received a vote in 79 of the last 80 AFCA coaches polls.
  • The Mustangs are ranked No. 9 in the D2Football.com Poll.
  • Senior quarterback Brandon Kelsey is this week's Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week.  The signal caller of the Mustangs' Pony Express,he led Midwestern State to a 35-31 victory at Abilene Christian by running for 141 yard and a career-high four touchdowns.  The 24 points equals the most scored in the Lone Star Conference this season.  The MSU quarterback also completed 12-of-16 passes for 121 yards in the contest as he directed the Mustangs attack to their sixth straight win and their third 500-yard game of the season.  Kelsey jumped to seventh on the MSU career rushing charts with 1908 yards and is seventh on the MSU career scoring list with 156 points.
  • With his touchdown against Abilene Christian, junior running back Keidrick Jackson now has 14 touchdowns, all rushing, for 84 points and leads NCAA Division II with 12.0 points a game. His 14 TDs tie the fifth best rushing touchdowns mark for a season in school history (with Lester Bush from last season).  He sports a career total of 40 touchdowns and 240 points – second and third respectively in MSU history .
  • Jackson established a new career-high with the 197 against ACU, which ranks as the sixth best rushing performance in MSU history.  He now has two of the top 10 MSU rushing games, both this season, and his 11th career 100-yard performance (fourth this year).
  • Jackson continues to lead the LSC in rushing with 128.7 yards a game, collecting 901 yards on 126 carries.  He ranks 16th nationally.
  • Jackson remains fifth in rushing all-time at MSU, but now has 2,374 yards and is within 167 yards of moving into second (held by former Indianapolis Colt Dominique Rhodes at 2,541 yards). 
  • Junior kicker/punter Greg Saladino extended his PAT string to 37 consecutive makes, 32 this season.  It's the second-longest string in MSU history. Saladino has 142 points, but moved back to ninth on the all-time scoring list as Kelsey jumped into seventh with 156 career points.
  • Midwestern State is 32-of-33 (97.0%) in the Red Zone through seven games with 26 touchdowns and six field goals, and allows opponents 18-of-23 (78.3 %) with 12 touchdowns and six field goals .      
  • The winningest coach in MSU history, Bill Maskill won his 80th game at Midwestern with the win over A&M-Commerce.  Maskill is 85-33 in his 11th season at MSU, 98-41 in his 13th season as a head coach.
  •  The Mustangs return five All-Americans from 2011.  Quarterback Brandon Kelsey was fourth in the Harlan Hill voting and was third team on the Don Hansen squad and honorable mention by the Beyond Sports College Network. Guard Ken Van Heule was second team on the Hansen and third team on the BSCN team.  Running back Keidrick Jackson was an honorable mention on both the D2Football.com and Hansen teams.
