Kelsey tabbed as LSC Offensive Player of the Week

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State quarterback Brandon Kelsey was selected as a Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Abilene Christian last Saturday.

The signal caller of the Mustangs' Pony Express, Kelsey led No. 12 Midwestern State to a 35-31 victory at ACU by running for 141 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.  The 24 points equals the most scored in the Lone Star Conference this season.

The MSU quarterback also completed 12-of-16 passes for 121 yards in the contest as he directed the Mustangs attack to their sixth straight win and their third 500-yard game of the season.  Kelsey jumped to seventh on the MSU career rushing charts with 1,908 yards and is seventh on the MSU career scoring list with 156 points.

Kelsey was joined by West Texas A&M running back Khiry Robinson as the offensive player.  Robinson rushed for 137 yards and four touchdowns in WT's 44-21 win at Eastern New Mexico.

WT defensive end Ethan Westbrooks and Texas A&M-Kingsville linebacker Mark Savere shared the league's defensive player honors, while TAMUK's Jonathan Woodson was honored as special teams player of the week for his 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Tarleton State.

Notable

  • The Mustangs 35-31 win at Abilene Christian moved their current win streak to six games, equaling the fourth-longest winning streak in MSU history, matching the 6-game streak of Sep. 10, 1949-Oct. 15, 1949.  Of those five longest winning streaks, three have occurred in the Bill Maskill era.
  • The Mustangs had to record their third consecutive second half comeback, the first time that's happened since MSU reinstated football in 1988.  It's just the third time since 1988 that MSU has recorded three or more second half come-from-behind wins, the most being four in 1991.
  • Midwestern State has a record of 99-40 since the start of the 2000 season, the most of any Lone Star Conference institution.
  • With its sixth win of the season, Midwestern State clinches its 13th consecutive winning season.  It's the longest active string of winning campaigns among Texas Division I or II institutions.
  • MSU collected 510 yards of total offense against the Wildcats to mark the third time this season the Mustangs have crossed over the 500-yard plateau.
  • Keidrick Jackson remains the leading scorer in NCAA Division II Football and the Lone Star Conference, with his 14 touchdowns for 84 points and 12.00 average.
  • Jackson established a new career-high with the 197 against ACU, which ranks as the sixth best rushing performance in MSU history.  He now has two of the top 10 MSU rushing games, both this season, and his 11th career 100-yard performance (fourth this year).
  • Jackson continues to lead the LSC in rushing with 128.7 yards a game, collecting 901 yards on 126 carries.  He ranks 16th nationally.
  • Jackson remains fifth in rushing all-time at MSU, but now has 2,374 yards and is within 167 yards of moving into second (held by former Indianapolis Colt Dominique Rhodes at 2,541 yards).
  • Brandon Kelsey picked up his third consecutive 100-yard game and the eighth of his career, ranking fifth all-time.  Kelsey's average of 82.1 yards a game rushing is third in the LSC and 52nd nationally.  He ranks fourth among Division II quarterbacks in rushing.
  • Kelsey leaped into seventh in all-time rushing at MSU now with 1,908 yards, passing  Jerrold Fuqua (1,822/2002-03) and Derrick Waggoner (1,781/1991-92).
  • The Mustangs now have three games of double-100 rushers.  Jackson and Jimmy Pipkin doubled up at Texas A&M-Kingsville, while Jackson and Kelsey have doubled against West Alabama and Abilene Christian.
  • With his five PATs against ACU, Greg Saladino extended his PAT string to 37 consecutive makes, 32 this season.  It's the second-longest string in MSU history.
  • Saladino has 142 points, but moved back to ninth on the all-time scoring list as Brandon Kelsey jumped into seventh with 156 career points.  Keidrick Jackson has 240, giving the 2012 team three of the top 10 scorers in MSU history.
  • Midwestern State is 32-of-33 (97.0%) in the Red Zone through seven games with 26 touchdowns and six field goals, and allows opponents 18-of-23 (78.3 %) with 12 touchdowns and six field goals.
  • With its ranking this week, Midwestern has appeared in the last 18 AFCA Division II Top 25 polls, has been ranked in 40 of the last 45 periods and has received a vote on at least one ballot in 79 of the last 80 reporting periods dating back to the 2006 season.
