VOLLEYBALL WEEKLY: Mustangs head South to face TAMUK, UIW

Midwestern State begins a five-match road stretch with games at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday and Incarnate Word on Saturday.

Mustangs battling for LSC Postseason Tournament Berth: Midwestern State begins the weekend one game behind Texas A&M-Kingsville for the eighth and final berth in the 2012 Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. Though nine matches remain on the schedule, MSU is in dire need of a spark to snap a five-game skid as the Mustangs battle for their sixth consecutive LSC Postseason Tournament showing.

Wallace Wallops: Junior middle blocker Caitlin Wallace ranks 10th in the Lone Star Conference with a stellar .269 hitting percentage. The Amarillo High product has posted 10-or-more kills in four of her last six matches including a season-high 16 against Texas-Permian Basin on Oct. 5.

MSU's Ace in Aduddell: Sophomore setter Kristan Aduddell ranks second in the Lone Star Conference with 0.38 service aces per set.  A product of The Colony (Texas) High, Aduddell posted service aces in eight consecutive matches from Sep. 25-Oct. 12 as she matched a season-high with three aces at Cameron (10/2) and against Texas-Permian Basin (10/5).

Fletcher Flexing Defensive Might: Sophomore libero Casey Fletcher ranks ninth in the Lone Star Conference with 4.08 digs per set. The Eddy, Texas native has recorded double-figure digs in each of her last five matches including a season-high of 32 digs against Texas-Permian Basin on Oct. 5.

Stewart Leading the Way: Senior outside hitter Shelbi Stewart paces Midwestern State with 2.78 kills per set and has posted 10-or-more kills in 11 matches this season including a season-high of 16 kills with no errors against Southwestern Oklahoma on Sep. 1.

Texas A&M-Kingsville (10-10, 3-8) has lost three of its last four matches but is 7-3 on its home floor at the Steinke Center this season. The Javelinas are led on the attack by Junior outside hitter Dedra Brown at 3.41 kills per set while sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Washington and freshman outside hitter Kelsee Felux add 2.71 and 2.21 kills per set, respectively. Sophomore setter Sarah Fountain pilots a TAMUK to a .183 team attack percentage while averaging 8.71 assists per set. Junior middle blocker Bethany Friesenhahn paces the Javelinas at the net with 0.87 blocks per set while senior libero Ali Insell leads back row efforts with 4.30 digs per set.
Previous Meeting (9/22): Beatriz Villalba and Michelle Blount put down 11 kills each to help Midwestern State a 22-25, 25-22, 26-28, 25-21, 15-10 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Dedra Brown paced Texas A&M-Kingsville with 19 kills.

Incarnate Word (7-13, 4-7) has lost its last three matches since claiming a 3-0 sweep of Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 6. The Cardinals' attack is led by freshman outside hitter Angelique Vidaurri (2.57 kills per set) and sophomore outside hitter Kelci Lind (2.51 kills per set) while juniors Danielle Suarez (5.66 set assists per set) and Sarah Cardenas (4.47 set assists per set) split setter duties. Sophomore middle blocker Baleigh Schaetter tops UIW at the net with 0.74 blocks per set while senior libero Lydia Werchan (5.25 digs per set) leads back row efforts.
Previous Meeting (9/20): Incarnate Word's Tina Chavez notched 14 kills to help the Cardinals escape with a 18-25, 25-20, 28-26, 25-22 win over Midwestern State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Caitlin Wallace (13), Beatriz Villabla (11) and Kasey Decker (11) all notched double-digit kills for the Mustangs.
All-Time Series: Midwestern State leads 9-8.

  • MSU has dropped five-straight matches for the second time this season and has lost eight of its last nine.
  • The Mustangs suffered sweeps to Angelo State and Tarleton State and are now 1-12 in three-set matches this season.
  • Midwestern State's Shelbi Stewart and Caitlin Wallace combined for 23 kills to lead the Mustangs to a .203 team attack percentage Friday against No. 11 Angelo State. The 'Belles are limiting the opposition to a .117 attack percentage this season.
