Byrd big in Mustangs' 3-0 win over Newman

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Midwestern State's Miranda Byrd smashed a match-high 13 kills to lead the Mustangs to a dominating 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 win over Newman (Kan.) Friday afternoon at the Pitt State Regional Challenge at John Lance Arena.

The Mustangs claimed their second consecutive tournament win to improve to 8-6 on the season while the Jets slipped to 2-11.

Byrd pelted Newman with one of her best offensive performances of her career. The 6-1 senior from Atlanta put down 13 of her 19 total attacks while committing just a single error for a stellar .632 kill rate.

Junior outside hitter Shelbi Stewart and sophomore middle blocker Caitlin Wallace added nine kills while senior Hillary had seven.

Senior libero Kiara Jordan led back efforts with 15 digs while Brandi Flores pitched in with 10 as MSU limited the Jets to a .103 team hitting percentage.

Freshman setter Kristan Aduddell notched 21 assists and junior Kim Jeffrey notched 12 more as the duo combined to help the Mustangs to a .251 hitting percentage.

Midwestern closes tournament play Saturday afternoon with matches against St. Mary's (Texas) at 1 p.m. and Missouri Southern at 4:30.
