Kiara Jordan led a great Midwestern State defensive effort Saturday afternoon with a season-high 40 digs.
But it wasn't enough to pull the Mustangs out of their current as Tarleton State came away with a hard-fought 25-18, 14-25, 14-25, 27-15, 15-10 Lone Star Conference win at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
MSU dropped its fifth straight match to fall to 6-6 on the season and to 2-5 in LSC play, but not without a fight.
The Mustangs were brilliant on the attack in decisive wins of the second and third sets as they posted nine kills to just one error in the second frame before putting down 11 kills with one miscue in the third set to take a 2-1 leads over the TexAnns, who improved to 8-5 and 4-1.
Midwestern dug its way out of a 6-0 hole to open the fourth set and had a look at match point after sophomore middle blocker
Caitlin Wallace put down her ninth kill of the day to give MSU a 24-23 edge - it was their first lead of the fourth set.
But Tarleton survived when Wallace was whistled for coming over the top of the net to deflect Jessie Hartman's set attempt to even the score at 24-24.
The Mustangs earned a second crack at match point after Wallace and junior
Shelbi Stewart blocked Tarleton's Flynn Harrell to regain a 25-24 edge, the TexAnns closed out the set by winning the next three points.
Wallace, who led the Mustangs with 14 kills with three blocks, accounted for seven of the team's 10 points of the fifth set with five kills and two blocks but it wasn't enough stave off the defeat.
Senior middle blocker
Miranda Byrd added 11 kills and hit .308 with a team-high four total blocks, while
Hillary White notched 20 digs followed by
Brandi Flores (11 digs) and
Kristan Aduddell (10 digs) who all joined Jordan with double-figure digs. MSU forced the TexAnns into 34 attack errors as TSU hit just .102 as a team.
Harrell paced Tarleton with 18 kills, while Emily Klein led back row efforts with 23 digs.
Midwestern State competes in the Pittsburg State Classic next weekend with matches against Northwest Missouri and Newman (Kan.) on Friday before playing St. Mary's (Texas) and Missouri Southern on Saturday.
