Game Day: Unbeaten Mustangs host No. 16 Javelinas to open home campaign

Setting the Stage

The 2-0 Midwestern State Mustangs finally gets to open the season at home in Memorial Stadium against the 16th ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas.

It's Family Day, with tailgating activities starting at 5:15 p.m.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

  •  100.9 BOB FM - The broadcast features the play-by-play voice of two-time Lone Star Conference Broadcaster of the Year Bill Powers. He is joined by KAUZ TV-6 anchorman Chris Horgan, who serves as color analyst.

  • Television - The game is being tape delayed telecast by Time Warner Warner Cable and the Texas Channel.  Dan Hawkins has the play-by-play, with Micky Miller providing the color analysis. Local playback is Sunday at 9 p.m. on WFTV-15, with the Texas Channel playback on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

    For the Record

    Midwestern State begins it's 24th season at home at Memorial Stadium, with MSU holding a 15-8 record in season openers.

    The Mustangs are 2-0, 1-0 in the Lone Star Conference, entering the game after beating Texas A&M-Commerce 63-17 last Saturday in the first game of Lone Star Football Festival at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

    Texas A&M-Kingsville is ranked 16th in the AFCA Division II Football Poll and sports a 2-1 season record, 0-1 in Lone Star Conference play after dropping a 42-21 decision to West Texas A&M in the third and final game of the Lone Star Football Festival last Saturday night.
     

    Who's Hot

    Midwestern State once again was slow starting, but when the game was over had amassed 592 yards and had an impressive showing against the Lions.

    MSU chewed up 369 yards on the ground, with five players collecting more than 60 yards rushing.  MSU leads the Lone Star Conference and is third nationally in rushing offense, averaging 311.0 yards a game.

    Sophomore Keidrick Jackson rushed for only 62 yards on 15 carries (4.1 per carry) but scored four touchdowns on the ground, turning the trick for just the fifth time in MSU history.  Jackson is averaging 72.0 yards a game, ranking fourth in the LSC. 

    He leads a group of Mustangs who hold four of the top 10 rushing spots in the LSC.

    Redshirt freshman Jimmy Pipkin led all rushers in the LSFF with 106 yards and broke an 87-yard touchdown run in the waneing seconds of the contest for MSU.  He's sixth in the LSC with a 69.0 yard average.

    Junior quarterback Brandon Kelsey ran for 70 yards on six carries and threw for 163 yards, hitting 14-of-20 passes against A&M-C.  Kelsey's averaing 243.0 yards of total offense a game, including collecting 68.0 yards rushing a game.

    Senior Lester Bush is averaging 54.0 yards a game on the ground with three touchdowns, while Peter Smith adds 46.0 yards an outing with a score.

    Senior David Little hauled in nine of Kelsey's passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns.  Little continues his climb up the career receiving charts, now ranking tied for second in receptions with Andy Tanner (2006-09) at 120.  Little is also fifth with 1,608 receiving yards and fourth in touchdown receptions with15.

    Senior linebacker Ty Duncan, the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week after the Missouri S&T game, leads the tackle chart with 15 stops.  The MSU defense has allowed 300 total yards a game, but leads the nation in scoring defense at 8.5 points given up a contest.

    Texas A&M-Kingsville junior running back Jonathan Woodson is second in the LSC in rushing, averaging 106.3 yards an outing to rank 25th nationally.

    Senior linebacker Marcus Sanders leads the Javelinas conference leading rushing defense that has only given up 47.3 yards a game.  Sanders has 14 tackles on the season and over 200 for his career.
     

    About the Series

    Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Kingsville are meeting for the 13th time when they clash at Memorial Stadium.  On the field, the series is tied 6-6, but MSU has a 6-4 advantage after two games have been vacated due to NCAA sanctions.  MSU saw it's five-game winning streak over the Hoggies snapped last season with TAMUK's 27-7 win. 
     

    Quick Hits

  • The Mustangs have been very good against the Javelinas at Memorial Stadium, winning four of the five games in Wichita Falls between the two teams.
  • MSU has been golden in the months of August and September during the Bill Maskill era.  The Mustangs are 36-7 (.837) in games played during those months.
  • Midwestern State is 15-8 in home opening games since resuming football in 1988.  MSU is 8-1 in home openers under coach Bill Maskill, with the only loss coming on Sept. 11, 2004 when Tarleton State beat MSU 19-3.
