WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 22 Midwestern State used a simple method to dispatch Incarnate Word 4-0 in a Lone Star Conference contest Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
"I felt like we played much more composed and played much more to feet," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "That was the difference today."
Midwestern, which rebounded from Friday's loss to Angelo State to improve to 3-1-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play, put on a show for the 650 in attendance which included a boisterous group of 30 from the Sheppard Air Force Base Trans-Saharan Cultural and Logistics class.
"It was fun for the girls to play in front of a passionate group that we had today," Trimble said.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead despite Incarnate Word's tactics of dropping numbers into the defensive end allowing MSU to outshoot the Cardinals 20-5 for the game.
Junior forward
Maddie Fraser chipped the ball over the UIW wall on a free kick from 25 yards just outside of the box in the 10th minute that settled well for senior
Lindsay Pritchard, who knocked the ball past Cardinals goalkeeper Tori Puentes for the only tally of the first half.
"We have to learn to play against teams that are going to pack it in and just let us come at them," Trimble said. "We weren't able to do that Friday night, but looked much better today."
The Mustangs put the match away with a pair of quick fire goals during a 3-minute stretch early in the second half.
Sophomore midfielder
Emily Saville tallied her third goal of the season on a Pritchard cross in the 52nd minute before senior forward
Kelsey Hill converted a through ball from
Callie Briseno to put MSU 3-0 in the 55th minute.
Sophomore forward
Mickey Brown closed out scoring in 80th minute when she finished a nice combination created by
Berklee Dressler and
Katy Catney down the right wing.
"This is a very tough league," Trimble said. "I have great confidence in the girls, but it's good to know that they will come and respond like they did."
Incarnate Word, which didn't manage a shot until the game was into its 73rd minute, fell to 2-1-2 on the season and 0-1-1 in league play.
Midwestern State hits the road for a pair of league games next weekend including West Texas A&M on Friday and Eastern New Mexico on Sunday.
