Chartier, Bennett too fast for SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Midwestern State's Megan Chartier and Elena Bennett combined for nine hits as the Mustangs rolled to a 7-2 Lone Star Conference North Division win over Southwestern Oklahoma Friday afternoon at SWOSU Field.

Chartier legged out a school record five hits, while Bennett also reached base in each of her five plate appearances going 4-for-5 with a walk as the top of the order constantly set the table against Bulldogs' ace Katie Raines.

But Raines worked her way out of numerous jams to keep Southwestern in the contest by stranding 11 runners. Raines, who fell to 9-6, allowed seven runs on 17 hits after not allowing an earned run in 21 innings at last weekend's LSC Crossover in San Angelo.

The Mustangs juped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after loading the bases with no outs on consecutive infield single by Bennett and Chartier while Mallory Mooney drew a walk, but Raines limited MSU to a run on Amanda Potysman's groundout to second base.

Midwestern junior outfielder Nicki Duff, who broke out with a three-hit game, laced a triple over the center fielder's head in the second inning before coming plateward courtesy of a wild pitch to advance the Mustangs' lead to 2-0.

MSU used its speed to to plate two more runs in the fifth inning as Chartier led off with a single, stole second and scored on Mooney's RBI single up the middle. The Mustangs tallied an unearned run later in the frame to push the advantage to 4-0.

Southwestern Oklahoma broke up Brittney Tanner's bid for her 11th shutout by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of Summer Blackowls's run-scoring single to left, while Johnna Smith scored on a wild pitch to cut the MSU lead to 4-2.

But the Mustangs put the game away with a three-run seventh inning highlighted by Alyson Reynolds' fourth homer of the season - a two-run lined shot over the left field fence.

Tanner improved to 22-3 while allowing two runs on seven hits and set a season high with 14 strikeouts.

Midwestern State and Southwestern Oklahoma conclude its three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at SWOSU Park in Weatherford. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
